off an under-edge off Shahid Afridi would hardly classify as a resgulation catch especially in this day and age. Most modern day keepers would let it go through their legs and nobody would blame them because of the speed at which the ball was travelling
I am so glad that the likes of Taibu and Kamran Akmal were allowed to come into their respective sides because of the skills behind the wickets rather than infront of it as is the case with most international sides. That's why wicketkeeping is a dying art in international cricket with teams picking batsmen-wicketkeepers over wicketkeepers or wicketkeeper-batsmen
Parthiv Patel's struggles and Dinesh Karthik's difficulties have IMO highlighted the need for an expert stumper especially for weak or spin-heavy bowling sides. Who is the best pure wicketkeeper in India? Is his name in the list of probables for India? Probably not because the only other name heard is that of Mahendra Dhhoni who is supposedly a Sehwag in the making

<snip> Seconded. The wk's job is behind the stumps. Most keepers can bit a bat a bit. Don't expect them to be Gillu. The batsmen need to do their jobs, don't look to keepers to bail you out each time. Otoh, do expect wk's to be great behind the stumps.

What's wrong with Dinesh Kartik? Did he drop any catches in this test?

test?
He's relatively ordinary, doesnt do particularly well (and today looked quite poor). Not nearly the struggles that Parthiv had, but far from "good".
No open catches or anything before I dont think - but balls that he *might* have gotten to as a catch, but wasnt moving that great etc. Today he did have a catch - shot off Kumble, probably not harder than the Akmal catch referred to above, and he wasnt close to catching it, it hit his gloves on the side and then luckily went to Dravid who caught it. If he hadnt gotten his glove to it at all I think it was too fine for Dravid to catch, would have gone for four - but he didnt really come very close to catching it, just sort of deflected it. And there were a couple of fours that went thru (as I noted elsewhere) that he really should have stopped - enough that Ganguly put Sehwag at fine short-fine, as a sort of backup keeper, because too many runs were going in that area with balls that Karthik should have at least gotten a hand to.
Basically, he hasnt been as bad as Parthiv in his worst days - but if you look at Parthiv's early "best glove days", he hasnt maybe been that much better either. And the big thing is that so far he hasnt contributed with the bat at all, at international level, and you cant have that in today's cricket. Too many good positions fade into non-dominant ones with the bat that way (and our bowlers need our batsmen to set up dominant situations). This isnt because Karthik cant bat - he looks neat enough, and looks like he has decent enough shots, but he just hasnt made runs. Plays too many shots too soon, shots that arent good for the ball etc. Silly stuff. Was batting ok with VVSL last match, then VVSL played some gorgeous leg-side clips for fours... and start of next over Karthik decided he'd do the same and instead hit it straight to squarelegs hands (with a non-threatening leg-side ball). Silly, without that maybe we could have gotten 550/600 last test, and had an even better shot at winning etc, cos he had been batting ok.
If he continues to not contribute runs, then he might be in some trouble. His glovework isnt awful or anything, no obvious terrible drops yet etc - but it hasnt been *good*, and without the runs there will be trouble (we had gotten used to some pretty good contributions down the order from Parthiv, really).
