Andrew,
The scoring rate seems to be very slow. Is the pitch a bit dodgey or are New Zealand trying some Boycottisms?

The pitch is docile, but the batsmen are taking it quietly in the main. Fine by me - they can bat for all five days as far as I'm concerned.

I was disappointed to find that Marshall came along and pushed the scoring into the super 2 rpo. I was looking forward to a nice day of Test cricket, played as it used to be when I was young(er).
Cricinfo seems to have died right now -- typical server problems whenever NZ play -- so, as Shripathi would have asked were he with us, can you point your webcam at your TV?

Gladly, but I will warn you that the TV is currently showing a Loony Tunes video. It's children's dinner time, and no amount of wailing from me about Marshall being 99* will make a blind bit of difference.

I've been very impressed with Marshall from what I've seen. Looks like NZ have got a good middle order player there for the next few years.

(hopefully that will give him the yips )
He's a decent player of medium pace on slower pitches. Can't handle quick short-pitched stuff aimed at the body, as uncovered by Harmison last year and Lee more recently. One reason why Lee should have played today.

Lee is a fairly useless 3rd bowler. So who do you drop McGrath or Gillespie? Do you make McGrath or Gillespie the 3rd bowler, I can't say they'd like being demoted for a guy that can barely make the team. I could have seen Australia with 4 quicks and Warne, then move Gilchrist to 6. If Ponting wanted to bowl this might have been a better course of action.

I thing the selectors got it right (I am not a Lee fan in the Test arena) but this is not a bad scenario. Would be interesting a return to teh good old days of 4 quicks.

Agreed.
I posted somewhere a while back that in ODO's Lee does not bowl a long spell (bowls short 3 - 4 over spells) and is bowling to batsmen who have to score and that this inflates his chances of success. Whereas in Tests if he bowls short, they leave it, wide, they leave it etc.
While I wouldn't quite have put it the way Thommo did I do tend to agree (not sure about the idiot thing though)

Ponting's captaincy has been a little iffy lately. He's been letting games drift when they have been in the bag, making mediocre bowling choices. He's been getting away with it so far.

If McGrath and Gillespe, probably the best opening bowling combination in the world can't get a wicket between the two of them, why do you think that Golden Buttocks will do any better?
It looks a pretty benign pitch. We'll know the truth if Australia go out and make a zillion on it.

McGrath failed to take a wicket because two regulation slip catches went down, and Aleem Dar forgot to raise his finger when Fleming was plumb lbw. Gillespie has an excellent record, but simply didn't bowl very well.
A bowler of Lee's pace can create problems on any pitch. We don't know whether he would have, but the rhythm he showed during the odo series suggests he's in decent form.
It looks a pretty benign pitch. We'll know the truth if Australia go out> and make a zillion on it.
Depends whether Warne can hit the footmarks regularly.

And he will continue to get away with it as long as thw world bowling stocks remain so low that teams are unable to apply the final touches when the Aussies are unber pressure.
To often we see them in deep crap only for poor bowling (moreso than good batting on the whole) to get them out of jail.
That is not to say that they have not on occasions batted well to recover but that on a whole poor bowling has let them back

Major gripe. Look, you want to argue about NSV bias at selection time, fair enough. I don't agree and haven't yet seen too many reasonaed responses, but it's an opinion certainly. But do try to stick to contesting what's actually being presented.
"anti-qld theories" is something you've made up (or borrowed from someone else who's made it up) to allow yourself a strawman to attack.

Really Dave? Forgotten this already have you?
"When they give out the baggy blue cap in New South Wales, they give you a baggy green cap in a brown paper bag as well to save making two presentations." The Victorian coach questioning the Australian call-up of NSW player Simon Katich.
And could you give me a couple of examples of SA "bleats" over "unhealthy bias in the selectors panel"(sic)? Which is odd because; a) Boof was dumped for a Blue and, b) don't they regard Hilditchcrawler as a Sth Australian then?

Fair enough call but Alvey what happened to your theories about pro-NSW and >ani-Qld selectors ?>
Recently we've seen:>
Symonds picked in the test team for Sri Lanka - maybe on one day form, God >knows why else
Maybe because a) Katich was injured and couldn't bowl at the time b) Australia wanted to play 2 spinners c) Symonds can bat in the top 6, bowl medium pace and bowl finger spin which meant that Australia wasn't going in with only McGrath coming back from injury and Gillespie as pace options.
A district grade class cricketer, Hauritz, taken to India over Magill
Hauritz 27 4 103 5 20.60 3-16 0 0 32.4 3.81
MacGill's last 2 series before that tour Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Aus/Ind) in Australia, 2003/04 [Series] - 4 194.4 711 14 4/86 5/138 50.78 3.65 83.4 0 0 Australia in Sri Lanka, 2003/04 [Series] Aus 2 55.2 232 5 4/74 5/143 46.40 4.19 66.4 0 0
why would you pick him to tour India on that, especially seeing as Warne was always going to play all 3 tests?
If you don't take MacGill what other spinners were clearly ahead of Hauritz?
The inclusion of a virtual unknown Hopes into the touring party
Perhaps you can suggest another medium paced allrounder who could have been taken - remembering that Harvey has had a huge run in one dayers in the past?
Hopes was, iirc, voted in as the player of the year in the domestic one dayers...
Kaspa over Lee (to be charitable perhaps Gillespise over Lee)
Perhaps you should look at what Kaspa and Lee have done in tests over the last 4 years?
I'll give you a hint, Lee averages well over 35. With the ball
Watson crack the test team prematurely
Again, perhaps you can suggest somebody else who could be picked to bat in the top 6 and bowl fast medium in Australia?>
Too much banana bender influence in the selectors discussion perhaps?
