How come kiwis cannot bat? Is there something wrong with NZ cricket?

Looking through the international teams, it seems all of them have got
at least one player averaging around 50 or more. Sri Lanka have a couple
in Sangakkara (54 avg)and Jayawardene (50). Australia have most of the
team. Kallis is pushing an average of freaking 60. India have a couple.
I know Paki have at least Yousuf (56avg). The poms have Pieterson (52).

NZ has no one even close. Our best if Flemming at 39.5.

No wonder we suck.

This is NZ's first Test series in 11 months, that is a farce in its self.
How are you supossed to build a competetive Test team if you never play
Tests?

NZL has a very limited pool of cricketers and that certainly is a
problem. NZL is a good ODI unit but when it comes to test cricket -
they struggle mainly cause they do not have a player like Mrk
Richardson who can occupy the crease for long so aggressive players
like Fleming, Styris, Oram, McCullum can play their shots.
I wonder whats wrong with Matthew Sinclair? He certainly is better
than Papps and Cummings.
Apparently Sinclair has been "found out" by international
teams....whatever that means. A domestic average pushing 50 clearly means
he's not good enough. Papps, with a domestic average of 35 clearly is, as
is Cumming with a whopping domestic average of 33.

Since contributors to this thread have either developed amnesia or don't
actually follow domestic cricket, I will remind you that in 2006/07 Papps
scored 1005 runs at 91.36 in domestic first-class matches. Those are
figures which are difficult to ignore. At the same time Sinclair had his
worst domestic season since his debut year in 1995/96, averaging just 30. I
believe it's called "current form" and is sometimes taken into account by
selectors who actually watch cricket rather than relying on StatsGuru
queries to form their opinions.

Current form is a load of crap if you ask me, Dungford. You need to look
at least a few seasons to get a players worth...and well...Papps isn't
worth much.

You need a combination of both current and career performance, unless you
wish to pick dead people.

All I'm saying is that the selectors couldn't really ignore Papps's form
from last season. In reality he has always been a low-bounce batsman who
plunges on to the front foot almost instinctively and is unlikely to ever
reach Test class on overseas pitches.

Well said!

Seems to me that some players in NZ cricket have "favoured" treatment.
How many failures did Hamish Marshall have before he was drop kicked?
Whereas the likes of Vincent and Sinclair seem to get dropped after a
few bad scores.
