Now with some sections even calling for the head of Dravid, it is
high time that the Indian Big-3, regardless of how much good
cricket
is still left in them, should call it a day.
If they have good cricket left in them, why should they quit?
So that India can win! Just because they have plenty of cricket left
in them it does not mean that they can win series or matches in crunch
time any more.
Let's go over the basics. There are 6 batsmen selected usually, and if
they are not one of the top six in the country, don't select them. If
they are one of the top six, they should be picked as there is a
lesser chance that the replacement would do better. There's none of
this ridiculous muck about "He's the best batsman in the country, but
there's this young whippersnapper who ought to be selected in his
place".
I am not completely sure I agree. It is a highly subjective decision.
If we had stuck to that, there is no way Sachin Tendulkar would
have served a 5-year apprenticeship with the team.
At the same time, we have tried several "promising" youngsters
only to discard them soon after.
There is much to be said for evaluating the upside in a marginal
pick. Of course, if the difference between #6 and the "young
whippersnapper" is day and night, the argument is moot.
Am I sure that I would not today pick a Manoj Tiwary or a
Rohit Sharma over Ganguly or Laxman today? I am not,
althought I am a huge fan of Laxman and am really appreciative
of the way SCG has sought to apply himself to the task since
his return to the senior side.
Actually, Vijay, SCG will more than likely face SCG McGill at the SCG. Three SCG's in one match!! I won't appeal to Aslam this time though.
