I will vote for the 1962 tour of West Indies. Not only was India
whitewashed 5-0, they almost lost skipper Nari Contractor's life, leading to
22-yr-old Pataudi's baptism by fire. Apart from some hopeless single-handed
battles by Polly Umrigar, India was completely done in by pace of Hall,
Griffith and rookie Lester King.

The 1952 tour of England, where India famously went 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 to
Freddie Trueman is equally forgettable except for Vinoo Mankad's call-up
from league cricket to death-defying performances.

Hmm...I agree with 1959 vs Eng at 1, and I'd put 1974 vs Eng at 2 (not> sure if you meant that as 2, since you have it on the second line).>
1959 vs Eng: what a horrible, horrible display. Even most one-sided> series have the odd good team performance or at the least individual> performance that serves as redemption. 1959 had nothing. About the only> bright spot in the series was Abbas Ali Baig's debut in the 4th Test,> and he went on to become one of the many Indian debut centurions who> never got to three figures again.>
1974 vs Eng: 42 all out. Lost the third Test by an innings and eight> wickets, surely a record of sorts even in the Bangladesh/Zimbabwe era.> That is, England lost only 2 wickets in their only innings, and still> won by an innings. 1952 in England, I have some sympathy for. Yes, we lost 3-0 in 4 Tests,> yes, we were 0/4 in one of the Tests, but Vinoo Mankad had a tremendous> allround performance in the second Test, and Vijay Hazare had a good> series with the bat overall. There have been worse series.>
India's record in England from 1952 to 1974:>
1952: Lost 0-3 in 4 Tests> 1959: Lost 0-5 in 5 Tests> 1967: Lost 0-3 in 3 Tests> 1971: Won 1-0 in 3 Tests> 1974: Lost 0-3 in 3 Tests>
Rather less than inspiring. It's been mostly much better since then,> though there have been no series wins, and only one Test win (in 2003).

1986!

And how did I forget that one? Don't know, but that was a good year all> right. Vengsarkar's peak, and the bits-and-pieces seamers coming> through.

There must be something strange about that year. Recently I listened to a
radio programme about the 1999 NZ tourists to England, during which it was
stated about five times that they were the first NZ team to win a series in
England.

And the worst one since India started playing Test cricket?>

2002-2003 tour of NZ is the WORST ever for the following reasons.

India had world class Fab 5 batsmen Sehwag, Sachin, Dravid, Laxman and
Ganguly in NZ series in its team and STILL LOST to an INFERIOR NZ team
The OPPONENT TEAMS in 1974, 91/92 and 99/00 were SUPERIOR compared to Indian
team while that was NOT the case in NZ series
India had a PROFESSIONAL COACH in John Wright for NZ series
India LOST to a SHITTY TEAM NZ bowlers of the calibre of Oram, Tuffey, Adams
and Styris
Indian players were NOT making as much money in endorsement contracts in
1974 and 1991-1992 series
India played with makeshift opener MSK Prasad and a flat track bully Devang
Gandhi in 99/00 Aus series

Based on all these FACTS, NZ series was the WORST EVER.

Case closed.

Was the Indian team more talented than WI and expected to beat the WI team
in that series ?

Wasn't India considered a MINNOW in 1952 ?

Not at all - WI was full of superheroes - Hunte, Kanhai, Sobers, Hall,
Gibbs, Griffith, etc.
