Underrated Fighters

The win by Ronald "Winky" Wright has alot of people talking these days
about how certain fighters are under valued and often over looked. This
brings me to another very talented boxer who the public never embraced;
Marlon "The Magic Man" Starling.

How many people here remember Marlon? Bubble tight defense, excellent
counterpuncher and mostly regarded as the best welterweight champion by
critics and the public had no clue who he was.

Very good fighter. He lost a close SD to Donald Curry from what I remember
and beat a young Floyd Mayweather Sr.

I thought he was overrated by the critics. He beat Mark Breland, one of the
weakest welterweight champions of the time, to win his title. I thought
Starling was lazy in the ring. At the time of the stoppage, I had Breland
way ahead on points at the time and it was only because Mark was not really
a strong welterweight that Starling was able to break him down. I also
recall Donald Curry beating Starling twice in uneventful bouts. The best
thing that Marlon did IMO was the Starling Stomp. I'm not saying he was a
bad fighter, but I did not care to watch him.

yea, he's from hartford. i guess hangs out in scully's gym 4-5 days a week
helping out guys there.

i saw one little kid, maybe 7 or 8 years old who walked in for the first
time... five minutes later he had the kid working the pads, teaching how to
throw a jab and a 1-2. real nice guy, works with everyone, and gives them
his full attention.

i really like the gym atmosphere. besides scully (and this irish kid he
trains, joe rae) i was definitely the only white guy in there. i was
definitely also the only kid whose probably spent more than 5 minutes on a
college campus. but like i said, the atmosphere is still sweet...as long as
work hard, i fit right in with everyone else, and no one questions me as
long as im talking to scully, who is basically the god of the place.

next week is my first sparring session...ill let you all know how it goes.
