Clottey sure had Corrales' number. Short, chopping right hands, quick
left hooks, excellent in-and-out footwork. But Corrales hung in there
and without using his reach advantage, too!
I haven't seen the video yet and I don't know anything about Clottey, but I
question whether Corrales has a reach advantage over the guy. From what I
recall, Corrales does not have much of a wingspan for a guy as tall as he
is. I am curious as to what their respective reaches are.
If nobody knows it, I'll do a search on it later.
Let me clarify an issue of wing span and advantages from it. The old
method of measuring the reach was from finger tip to finger tip. Both
Corrales (5'10 1/" 2and Clottey's (5'8") records show an equal reach
of 70". However, the reach advantage come also from the height with
the ability to go straight to the face or "over the top." What
Corrales did was set up a poor strategy to take away Clottey's short
range power. Corrales started going to Clottey's body early on. This
let Clottey use his leveraged (close in) shots. The outcome may have
been different if Corrales had been more patient and set himself up by
using a "jab and move" in the early rounds and then work the body as
Clottey raised his hands higher or was made to move back more to avoid
the jab.
Just an opinion from an old man.

Corrales is notoriously bad at setting distance though. Its why
Casamayor handled him in their last fight and how Castillo was able to
so easily blow him away. He stands and bangs, and against consistently
bigger opponents, its a uphill road.

Clottey had said before the fight that he knew that Corrales wanted to
stand outside and box him, but that he would hit him a few good hard
ones and Corrales would come inside, just where Clottey wanted him.

Clottey's plan worked just as he figured it would.

True!!!
