Description:

"...the most important work on classical boxing I have seen so far ...
this book will be very very important in the history of this art."
-Ken Pfrenger

"Reads very nicely, logical progression, clear layout..."
-Tony Wolf

Join Western martial artist Kirk Lawson as he explores the exiting and
mostly forgotten world of grappling from historic boxing.

Using antique boxing manuals as reference as well as a healthy dose of
experience, Kirk systematically presents in easy to follow terms and
sequences the throws, trips, and grapples of historic boxing.

With more than 70 illustration, both new and taken from historic manuals,
modern martial artists and boxing historians alike will find this book an
indispensable reference.

HGH does just what Stallone says. It's useful in anti-aging treatment.
What's your problem?
Exactly. It's a medically approved and prescribed drug that has many
legitimate uses. The only reason it is maligned in athletics is that it
gives an unfair advantage to users.
With two remarks
1 that is true for every kind of doping.
2 it is not really unfair beacuse all top sporters use it anyway.
So who cares ?
Edmund

Well certainly not "all top sporters" use performance enhancing drugs. That
statement is clearly not supported by ANY facts.

And, some drugs, like anabolic steroids, can have long-term debilitating side
effects. For those over 60 like Stallone, the short-terms benefits might
outweigh the long-term side effects (if any) of HGH and/or testosterone
therapy. For an athlete in his 20's, the long term effects are certainly are
much more troubling.

John Ruiz aims to clean up the heavyweight division Willie Williams 04:32:18

Ruiz aims to clean up heavyweights

January 28, 2008
LAS VEGAS (Ticker) - Two-time WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz has
targeted a world title showdown with the winner of the March 8 fight
between Oleg Maskaev and Samuel Peter.

Ruiz (42-7-1, 29 KOs), rated No. 3 by the WBA and No. 6 by the WBC, is
set to fight Jameel McCline on the undercard of Maskaev-Peter in
Cancun, Mexico.

"I'm getting ready to clean up the heavyweight division, starting
March 8 with McCline, and then I want the Maskaev-Peter winner," Ruiz
said from his Las Vegas training camp on Monday.

Ruiz, 36, lost his WBA title the first time to Roy Jones Jr. in 2003,
regaining it in his next fight against Hasim Rahman after Jones
relinquished the belt without defending it.

After three successful defenses, "Quiet Man" Ruiz lost the title on
points to Russian Nikolay Valuev in 2005 and then saw a split decision
go against him in a title eliminator against Ruslan Chagaev in
November 2006.

In his only fight since, Ruiz stopped Otis Tisdale in the second round
of their October 13 bout in Chicago and now the Massachusetts native
faces 37-year-old McCline (38-8-3, 23 KOs), who lost an interim WBC
title shot to Peter by unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden
last October.

"McCline almost beat Peter in his last fight and he's a lot better
than some people give him credit for," Ruiz said. "He floored Peter
three times but we'll see how tough he is on March 8."

Earlier I posted a jab at you that was incorrect. I stated in so many

No worries.
Don't you think that sometimes the Marciano praising is taken way too
far? I mean, everyone loves a fighter like Marciano just like
everyone loves Gatti. But that shouldn't prevent us from judging
Marciano [or Gatti] according to his merit. Some of the non-sensical
things said about or in defense of Marciano go over the top.
TNS

Here's the deal, TNS, Marciano's time is unfettered with
coulda-woulda-shoulda. He just did it.

For me, I hold Marciano high in my personal rating system
because he personified a human effort by surpassing all
pervious notions of training regimens, pre-fight preparations,
and all out efforts in the ring. He became the model, measuring
stick, the calibration for all that could by a human being
when faced with choices. The man never left his fight in the gym,
in pre fight comments, or some assinine behaviors out of the ring.

Re: Russ Anber bashes Rocky Marciano Guest 08:10:48
 On Fri, 11 Jan 2008 12:21:06 -0800 (PST), bugees.boxing@gmail.com
wrote:

I recently watched a videotape of Russ Anber's "Classic Night At The
Fights: Rocky Marciano", and after seeing it I felt I had to expose
the shocking, false statements I heard.
This is the usual unprofessional sports writing we are used to getting
from HBO, TSN and ESPN. The documentary is filled with inaccurate
statements, which I'm about to list. They believe Marciano is
overrated (and Ali, of course, was "the Greatest"), but they have done
very little research on the man. In any case, a picture of Muhammad
Ali is on the wall next to host Russ Anber, and all you hear
throughout the documentary is that Marciano hand-picked his opponents
to avoid difficult fights.
Anber keeps repeating how old Archie Moore was (39), implying that he
was hand-picked for that reason. Any serious journalist would probably
say that Marciano chose Moore because he was the light heavyweight
champion of the world at the time. Like most ignorant critics who have
done no research, Anber keeps telling us how old Louis, Moore and
Walcott were, giving the impression that Marciano only fought old
guys. He leaves out the fact that most of Marciano's opponents were
young, including his best opponents (Layne, LaStarza, Matthews).
Russ Anber also calls Don Cockell "a roly poly British heavyweight".
He forgets to mention that Cockell was the reigning British
heavyweight champion. Any serious documentarian would mention this as
the reason Marciano fought him, instead of implying that Marciano was
a coward. A quick look at boxing history shows that the world champion
frequently fought a European champion to prove he really was the
world's best. Also, Cockell had just beaten two world heavyweight
contenders, so Marciano really had to fight him to prove himself. All
of this is omitted in this so-called documentary.
Anber repeats that Marciano's manager thought Ezzard Charles' days
were over. This implies that Charles was also "hand-picked". This is
also absurd, since Charles had been champion just 2 years earlier. The
fight was a must for Marciano, not a choice. Charles was 33 years old
and still fighting great. At this point, Anber finally decides to name
names, and tells us exactly WHO Marciano ducked. Ready? The name is...
Nino Valdes! A quick look at Valdes' boxing record shows just how
incompetent Russ Anber really is. He conveniently forgets to mention
that in 1952-1953, Valdes lost 4 fights in a row. So you can decide
for yourself if Marciano was afraid of him. Also, Valdes was beaten
twice by Archie Moore, once in 1953 and once in 1955. The truth is,
for anyone who does some research, that Marciano was probably
considering a fight with Valdes in 1955, but chose Moore when he saw
him beat Valdes for the second time. That Marciano ducked Nino Valdes
is the most ridiculous sports statement ever made in public.
Still not convinced how unprofessional Russ Anber is?
In 1952, Marciano fought a fast Muhammad Ali-style boxer named Harry
Kid Matthews, who was 29 years old with a record of 81-3. This was a
title eliminator, but Anber does not show the fight in this video.
It's one of the very few fights for which film footage exists, so why
didn't he include it? Why omit this one? The fight goes like this: the
fast, dancing Matthews does the stick-and-move on Marciano, outboxing
him and easily winning the first round. In round 2, while Matthews is
moving backward, Marciano catches him with a quick, long-distance left
hook and puts him to the canvas for the ten count. I'll let you decide
why Russ Anber did not include this fight in the documentary, and
instead filled it with unsubstantiated charges, implying that Marciano
was a coward. This documentary was made by people who obviously have
never done any real research on Marciano.
Most TV stations like to keep the audience thinking Muhammad Ali was
"The Greatest", since they have so much fun, entertaining, color
footage on the guy. I myself love to watch Ali, but I separate
entertainment from talent. He was the most entertaining, but whether
he was the most talented is a completely different story. Russ Anber
is not qualified to give anyone a true account of how good any boxer
really was. You can learn more about Marciano by just watching the
fights and reading the accounts of the ones that were never recorded
on film.

A very interesting approach to stripping away the mantle of coward to
throw light on the Marciano years.

news:a574f9c8-b5ab-40a2-9bed-b6e71ff546ef@f10g2000hsf.googlegroups.com...
In the 1970's, the heavyweight division became the ultra-heavyweight
division. And by ultra-heavy I mean fat and sluggish. Gone were the
golden days of Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano, when boxers
stayed in shape, ate healthy, and relied on speed and strength to win.
The new, so-called "golden era" of boxing was not quite what it
seemed: it was the golden era of morbid entertainment. Watching Joe
Frazier, Muhammad Ali and George Foreman fight eachother was similar
to watching a monster movie, like Godzilla vs Mothra. Fat, sluggish
giants pounding at eachother, what a fun thing to watch while eating
popcorn! The media capitalized on the sudden, immense popularity of
the sport, and boxing was soon turned into a big circus. The ignorant
masses went along for the ride. It was so much more fun to watch
Muhammad Ali imitate George Foreman than to see Joe Louis fight Arturo
Godoy on black-and-white film. Of course, as far as strict boxing
talent goes, the 70's were the worst we had ever seen. The once fast,
lean Cassius Clay had now morphed into the overweight imitation known
as Muhammad Ali. Yes, Ali looked fast and slim when you compared him
to the other Godzillas of the time; but in absolute value, he was fat.
Since the 1970's boxing has gotten worse and worse. Mike Tyson was a
glimmer of hope, but the big fat Lennox Lewis put the definite nail in
the coffin of heavyweight boxing.

Heavies are boring anyway. Hever see one that can move like Pacman? Neither
have I.

Can one bout Ruin a pro-career. or Two bouts.....? Dallas 22:06:29
I tend to think the answer is yes with Bowe vs Golata I in which Bowe just
absorbed way too much punishment and also, Chavevs Taylor I, both Taylor and
Bowe apeared to be repeatedly tagged in those bouts with major effect on
their careers in boxing. To be more specific, Tayor fought Norris a few
fights later and also was tagged all over the place and that bout did him in
career-wise. Bowe at the direction of Newman naively fought Golata again
right away and again took way too much punishment. Rumour has it that
Taylor was slurring his words by 1992 and advised by the Duvas to
retire..Bowe's speaking skills are to still subject to review, in some tests
by the state of Tennesee tests were inconclusive..................

Any suggestions?
This is coming from a boxing-starved old schooler! I'm desperate for
some quality action.
"2008s gotta be great!", sounds like an Ali quip, if this year is not
great though boxing will continue its sad demise.
Does anyone know where I can view the ring walks and intro's to Duran/
Leonard II, from New Orleans 1980? Ray Charles sings 'America the
Beautiful' when Leonard comes out. Now I'm not American but that still
sends a shiver! I'd love to see it again, especially now since I'm on
holidays and have plenty of free time to catch up on my favorite
sport.
Blair

There is a DVD called something like "Hearns, Hagler, Duran and
Leonard" and there is also "The Latin Legends" DVD which I can not
remember too much about Ray Charles. But to hell with the music the
fighters back then were something else.

I will never forget those 4 rounds of Hearns and Hagler myself.
