| Crips lines in Gelcoat Dan Hapster 23:40:34 |
| | I'm re-gelcoating a boat. I am spraying the field one color, and a different color boot stripe. I am trying to achieve a very crisp line between the two colors but it's proving to be a challenge with the thickness of gelcoat I'm trying to build at approx 20-25 mils.
I'm spray the stripe first taped on the top and bottom edge. Spraying the dark blue after.
Need a very crisp line between the two. This way after it is sanded, the two colors will be flat, just like it popped out of the mold.
I'm using 5 layers of 3M's 213 fine line tape, one layer right over the other both edges of the boottop. Then spraying the gelcoat until it fills the void.
Pulling the tape while the gelcoat is tacky results in an edge that sags.
Pulling the tape after it sets up results in a chipped edge.
I am now sanding the over spray off the top layer of tape until the tape's edge is exposed. This yields a very crisp line, but it is labor intensive.
Are there any tricks out there? How do they put stripes in a mold? I'm trying to achieve perfection cuz good enough is just not good enough. Thanks, Dan

| Planning Around What You Have - Aluminum Boat Plansd Bob La Londe 15:46:47 |
| | Ok... It looks like I am going to have to junk my fiberglass bass boat. Over the last few months I have been doing a repair and rebuild project on an aluminum bass boat that had been wreched. I bought it for less than salvage. Now I am looking for a decent bass boat design for a bigger water bass boat.
I figure outboards are the most expensive part of most small craft. Add in rigging and the hull is almost an afterthought for some. Anyway. I am looking for designs to take advatage of the outboards and riggingI already have. I've got a great condition (mechanically) Black Max 150 and a good condition Optimax 225. Being a psychotic ego tripping speed junky bass fisherman I am ideally looking for designs that will have a max HP rating similar to the motors I have available to put on them. What I have found is that either the designs available are not ideal for a bass fishing layout or they aren't available in the max HP range I am looking for. I did notice that several designer underated the HP when you plug in the formulas from the backyard boat builder pamphlet from the Coast Guard, but I really hesitate to deviate from the HP ratings of the designer.
I am specifically looking for aluminum designs.
I have also considered buying a couple designs and then using them to derive my own design and rate it myself.

| Southbound Swan 44 lost off the New Jersey coast along with owner/skipper Wayne . B 23:14:47 |
| |
One lost, two rescued, USCG Rescue Swimmer injured.
The boat, Freefall, was owned until recently by well known Long Island Sound racing sailor, Bill McFaul, whom I raced with and raced against any number of times. Apparently the new owner was taking the boat south this week in some pretty gnarly conditions. The boat was well built as you might expect for a Swan 44, and always well maintained and equipped when I sailed on it.
https://www.piersystem.com/go/doc/651/236966/
Reading the USCG account of conditions, you have to wonder what the heck they were thinking of going out there. Tragic. At least they had a working EPIRB, properly registered.

Hi ng, Normally I'm lurking but now I've got a question. On our crossings we normally have a downwind course. When the wave's come in at say between 120 and 160 degrees our boat tends to roll a 10 degrees over starboard and 10 degrees over port. What I do is getting the weight as low as possible, even out as much as possible the sail surface's at port and starbord, and sometimes steer another course. I wonder if you are familiar with any further techniques I havent thought of yet. Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance, Len, pa2q
I can't think of anything besides not sailing a different course.

| Caulk Gogarty 21:29:29 |
| | It being layup time, went shopping at Post Marine for various odds and ends. One item needed was BoatLife Life Caulk sealant for rebedding a leaking deck deadlight. It sells for around $14 for a 2 oz tube. They did not have any. So I went to Home Depot and after carefully examining all the products on sale to do the same thing, bought a 6 oz tube of non-silicone sealant for around $3.00. Seems to work. Any reason why it should not?

| Deals on bluewater boats yet? Ray Lunder 02:58:18 |
| | Looking for a used cruise equiped 30-40 foot sailboat for approx a us buck per foot. Any ideas? Techniques? I've tried 38/48 north and craigslist so far. Most of these are worn out craft from the 60/70's in need of major refit or were never cruise equiped in the first place. To cruise equip a boat at present "boatyard" or "west marine" cost is prohibitive. I'm in washington state, usa but don't mind flying somewhere. You'd think with all these bank problems people would be forced to sell luxury items. Are we going to see a 70's style bargain hunter season any time soon? Please don't let this degrade into a political thread, I just want to buy a boat. What's a person with ready cash to do?

| The reason for boat balls, an update Jan 01:04:41 |
| | Late last night, a huge sailboat came ghosting into this marina. David, her owner and captain usually sails Aratinga, a 60 foot Alden with an 80 foot mast, outside on the open ocean but he said he thought this year he d like to try the ICW. Now this is quite the accomplishment, given that the fixed bridge heights on the ICW are all around 65 feet. David ingeniously rigged up a way of tilting his boat over so that she slides under the bridges, healed up on an angle. He has two one-ton (yes, 1 ton) thick rubber bags of water hanging midway up his mast. His boat has a slight tilt to starboard anyways and when he wants to tilt Aratinga over to pass under a bridge, he lets the line out on these bags of water so they hang over the side and that increases his starboard list. He figures that to cut 10-15 feet off his mast, he has to let the bags hang out 10-15 feet to starboard. It s worked up to this point and I ll bet this New Zealander will be the talk of the ICW for years to come.

Don't think so? Go to youtube.com and enter "Electone" into the youtube search engine. You'll see young girls and women sitting at Yamaha Electone home organs. Play the videos. Hell, one of them is 10 years old and can hardly reach the pedals she can play in 16th notes at a terrific pace.....perfectly. I think they have a breeding farm and are continuing the genetic experiments since the war. NOONE can play STAR WARS MEDLEY in SIX parts all on ONE little organ....and sound like John Williams directing the Boston Symphony Orchestra in some girl's little bedroom.....try it...amazing. You probably don't know him, but I have spent hours listening to a guy from NJ named Don Slepian who plays a most amazing instrument that *will* pretty accurately represent an orchestra, or choir, or band, or organ or, or, or... in combinations of same.
And his keyboard is a single register, no pedals other than what amounts to "sustain" and possibly an auxiliary programming switch (I could be remembering an earlier version on that last). Two can carry his whole kit out to the car between us, amps, speakers and all. He seems able to "split" the keyboard so certain keys/sections can represent separate instrument combinations, so I guess he has several virtual registers.
The primary difference is that his keys have two sequential contacts: The processor not only measures how hard he presses the keys, but how fast. The same key can be percussion (fast and hard), strings (slow and soft), horns (slow and hard), something else for fast and soft. Allows him to change "instruments" keypress by keypress.
Listening and watching <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ueMCJ3fsu0> seems to indicate that the Electone may have similar capabilities. If so, the half-dozen musicians I've watched are hardly touching the instrument's capabilities. Even that piece is rather mono-toned. (After an hour of the highest-rated ones, I got bored from the lack of dynamic range.)
Hate to say this, though: Some of the Electone samples grate on my nerves even with the limited range of the instrument given the three or more dedicated registers. I admit to being rather more critical than most as I once was a pretty good French horn player and grew up listening to some pretty decent organs live: Wanamaker's, their earlier one housed at Drexel, and the Philly Orchestra's. Guy up near Flemington, Bruce Williams, has some pretty decent ones, too. Oh, and we have some pretty amazing kids at Curtis, too.
Still, I can understand how wonderful the Electone sounds compared to the simpler keyboard instruments.
