Class Ten Rapids?

If you do a Google Search on River Rapid Rating System
<http://makeashorterlink.com/?C3062261B>, this site comes up first:

<http://www.ehow.com/how_9483_understand-river-rapid.html>

It says:

1. Realize that there are two different rating systems: the
European scale (International Scale of River Difficulty)
and the American scale.

2. Read the European scale from I to VI, with I being the
easiest and VI being unnegotiable.

3. Read the American scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the
easiest and 10 being very dangerous.

Anybody ever heard of this "American scale" before? A new one to me.
An old outdated rating system, or are the folks at ehow.com just making
it up?

Lets hope that nobody's going to stumble across their site and then try
to run a class 5 because the internet says it's about the middle of the
scale.

Just another example of incorrect information on the internet.

The American Whitewater Affiliation 6-point river rating system
replaced an earlier system about the mid-1950's. For example, look on
the AMERICANWHITEWATER pages, starting here:
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/archive/safety/safety.html
There has been an effort to re-define rapids and ratings in the past
few years, which has not been widely utilized.
The only US river I'm aware of where a ten point system is in
use is the Colorado in the Grand Canyon, a legacy of many years
probably kept because commercial interests like customers to believe
at class 10 is more thrilling than a class 6.

I can't speak for European ratings, except that I can understand
ratings in their guidebooks, and European paddlers who have visited
around here to paddle West Virginia understand our 6 point scale.

And there are variations on the 6 point scale, such as in Fortin's
whitewater guidebook to Quebec. And for something totally different,
Monte Smith's rating system. Tom McCloud

And then there's the Spinal Tap Scale, that goes to 'leven.>

The I - X scale applies to the grand Canyon of ther Colorado. Roughly
divide of 2. Lava and Crystal being rated 9-10. The have the big water
ability of causing havok on 38' rafts. Others like hermit an 7-8 can
either flip an 18' raft or just have a fun ride dorn the middle. All other
rivers have the 1-6 scale with 6 not considered runnable.
