GPS to CMAP aptop connection using COM to USB adapter

Peter Hendra 13 May 2005 03:33:26
 Hi,

I posted this to rec.boats.electronics a few days ago but have had no
response.

I am running CMap software on a laptop. I am using a USB to serial
port adapter. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. There seems
to be no logic as to why CMap sometimes fails to accept the input. The
"on" and data lights on the PFranc brand flash but CMap says that
there is no connection. I have checked the ports in "system" but it
sometimes doesn't know anything about the USB connection. I have been
using it for 4 years now. I have tested other brands for friends on
other laptops and some just do not make a connection.

Is it CMap?

Is it XP pro?

Any suggestions.

My Laptop gets confused sometimes thinking that I have a USB mouse or
sometimes a serial mouse hooked up to the USB ports when its actually
my GPS reciever antenna thingy.
Check your device manager to see what you have listed when it is
working, and when it isnot working and that may give you a clue to
whats going on.

Everytime I plug in my com to usb adapter XP assigns it to some unlikely com
port, usually somewhere in the 20's. I have to manually reset it back to com
1 and all is well until I unplug and re-plug it.
Don't know if that's your problem but worth a look if you haven't already.
