I have a 2001 Bayliner Classic Capri 1950 which has a 3.0 135 Horsepower Mer and have been told by my friend that I will need a trolling motor because the main engine will not go so enough for trolling for Salmon. Is this true or does anyone out there troll with the main engine.

A kicker will help you slow way down and you can connect it to your outdrive so you can control it from the steering station.
There are other ways like sea anchors and drag chutes of various styles if you look in the fishing magazines - there's a couple of different manufacturers and designs.
However, if you can slow it down to 2 mph and keep your lines deep and in the strike zone, you shouldn't have a problem or need the extra equipment.

A trolling plate might help. It attaches to the lower unit and can be pushed down behind the prop to deflect thrust and thus slow down the boat.

I use my main engine. I had problems getting to a slow trolling speed until I visited a professional prop shop. As it turned out, the pitch of the OEM prop was much too high for the boat. I bought the correct pitch prop and never had a problem since. I can get down to 1.6 mph at normal idle. (measured by GPS)
On the several boats I previously owned, I used a kicker engine. I had never thought about checking to see if the prop pitch was correct for the boat. I guess I'll never know if I had really needed to spend that extra $1,400 for a kicke engine. (It now sits in the shed out back, haven't used it for 4 years)

Good Luck.
I guess i should have said I tried the trolling plate on my previous boat. It worked OK, but one day I forgot to release it and turned it into a twisted piece of junk aluminum when I hit the throttle wide open.
I fish for walleye mostly (Lake Erie). However we do catch our share of rainbows and salmon (stocked by PA). I have and had used a sea anchor (the bag type) but that didn't slow me down enough with the old prop. Besides, they are very clumsy to work with.
I have seen other boaters dragging 5 gallon buckets on each side of the boat. That has to be a chore. You really need planer boards then because all that racket in the water makes the fish under you scoot far to the side.
If you really want to go slow, the cheapest solution is to get a low pitched prop, even one much lower than what is right for your boat. When you know you will be going fishing, put on the low pitched prop. Be very careful of your engine RPM, you could do some serious engine damage. And I mean really careful.
When you're just out for a day of cruising around, throw the correct pitch prop on.

It can be ad advantage to have a kicker motor anyways and idling the> kiclker to death doesnt hurt as much as it does with the big motor>

One other consideration is that 2 strokes are very dirty at idle. On a still day the fumes are nasty. I like a small 4 stroke kicker.

Ever hear of port scanning, you know looking for an open port to access the computer? Ever wonder how hackers can get into "secure mainframes"? Steal credit card names and numbers and other information? Get through hardware firewalls? A fixed IP makes it all the easier.
