Got a mercruiser alpha gen II outdrive that the bearing going into the outdrive (not the hub) gets hot, also has faint scraping noise. Anyone know the average cost of repair? I'm going to remove the outdrive and carry into the service center.
Also, the cost to weld the typical hole that bleeds air in to the water intake on Mercruiser outdrives above 35 MPH causing overheat and a new skeg (previous owner ground it off )

I just had a drive rebuilt with a bent prop shaft and they used an almost newly built lower end... all said and done though it was about $1300 CDN ... just an idea but expect approximately $700-$1500 to do so... you might want to look at a rebuilt one and return yours as a core... There are lots of options like that out there.

For what it's worth the top section will be normally pretty hot after running on plan a while. It's pretty far out of the water and the gear oil does not circulate. How do you know it has a faint scraping noise if it's still on the boat?

With muffs at fast idle in my back yard the top bearing gets to be about 30 degrees hotter than the rest of the outdrive. A faint scraping like rust in a roller bearing can be heard from the top of the outdrive. Noticed it one cool morning as it was steaming (visable vapor), felt it and it was hotter than the rest of the outdrive. I Assume that the top bearing can be dry (no oil, it's above the top vent hole that you "fill to") and when not used for extended periods... rust

Mercruiser service note: a small hole develops near the pump housing and at high speed sucks air from the exhaust into the raw water system. this reduces cooling slightly and since this happens when the engine is at max load causes overheat.

Why don't you take the top cover off and have a look at the bearing race. It should take you less than 5 minutes. JIMinFL
