I've crewed a bunch on an F27 (which I very nearly bought half of), and I don't think the issue is mast length per se. The F27 mast looked like a handful, but with the clever lifting rig provided it's quite easy to deal with; going from trailer to water is probably a half-hour proposition if you've got a bit of practice. I'd guess that a mast could be significantly longer and be just as easy to deal with given a similar setup scaled up.
Do you take advantage of her extreme shoal draft much?
For getting a mooring in a crowded harbor it was handy. I also like thin muddy water but that's not everyone's kink.
1. Buying an older F27 and refitting her with new standing rigging and>new sails and fixing any stress cracking. I estimate purchase price of>$55,000 with over $15000 for sails and rigging, etc. Problem is>getting the $55k together at one time.
Is that $55k for just the boat or for boat+rigging? $55k will get you your pick of F27s from what I've seen of the market lately, and I'd guess you can spend a lot less if you don't care about the state of the rig.
While cruising do you really notice increased speed over monohulls?
generally catamarans and trimarans are faster on some points of sail in some conditions and slower at other times. overall they may be no faster or slower than a monohull of equal length depending on the wind speed and direction over the course sailed. with theri smaller hulls they are lighter displacment than monohulls of the same length so cannot carry as much cargo. one advantage of mulithulls for cruising is they don't heel over as much as monohulls. catamarans heel over very little. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ William R Watt National Capital FreeNet Ottawa's free community network homepage: www.ncf.ca/~ag384/top.htm warning: non-FreeNet email must have "notspam" in subject or it's returned
