rec.boats has got to have the most off-topic posts that I've ever seen in a newsgroup. I'm outta here ...unsubscribing. The OT people have made it not worth the time to peruse the headers trying to find something useful or interesting in all the 'noise', not to mention those that resemble a place where the sun don't shine more than they resemble fellow human beings. That's for both sides of the fences (there's a few).

So, you let the OT trolls win, simply because you can't operate a newsgroup filter? Filter the BS out- it works pretty well.

Brian, this isn't a knock on you but I have been wondering something. Perhaps you could help me (if you are still here that is).
If you have decided that this group is no longer enjoyable, why announce you are leaving and no longer reading the group? I mean, why not just quit reading it instead of announcing that you are quitting? I was just wondering. Mark E. Williams

Sorta kinda reminds me of those who find it necessary to announce who they filter.

I love it when they regularly publish the filter log. ; )

Sorry to see you leave Tom but I understand your frustration with the foul language, name calling and "my political party is better than your party" crap.
Give it a bit of a break for a while and reconsider coming back.

What could you possibly do that's more fun or profitable than pissing on another's shoes?
I realize it's hard to stay in the middle.
Come back once Karl is indicted and Libby turns on Cheney. I'm sure that'll calm things down considerably and we'll go back to moderate conversation, just like a friendly campfire.

If the case actually goes to trial, and Libby hasn't been promised a pardon, I would say ratting out Cheney is probable. I find it hard to believe someone as smart as Libby acted on his volition in these matters. I think Cheney told him to do it.
As for Tom, I'm sorry to see him go, but he wasn't an innocent; he also posted political commentary.

Speaking of people who left do to the political garbage that is dumped in wrecked.boats. Clams Canino says hello, He did some work on two of my boats over the last week.
We took out the Phamton Menace II for a short run. That old in-line six merc he has is pretty cool.

Your post jogged a memory flash in the old hard drive in my head. When I got out of the Navy back in 1977 a friend of mine gave me an old six cylinder Merc outboard. The thing was huge, but was only about 60 hp if I remember correctly. It was black with a chrome band around the body of the motor. I think it was of a mid to late '60's vintage. I built a stand for it and stuck it in a 55 gal drum and it ran fine. The last I knew it was buried somewhere in my father-in-law's garage. He never throws anything away, so it's probably still there. I'll have to check if I ever get back home.

Thats what CC's Merc looks like, I forgot what year it is but I would not be surprised if it was mid 60's "Phamtom Black" with a large chrome band on the engine. 6- hp sounds about right as well.
Those engines are his main focus. He has a nice little shop where he works on them.

Jim,
Tom has been one of the positive contributors to the group. He would get involved in OT threads, but normally would not use the post as a troll to insult others, but as a means to honest discussion. If he left w/o a reason, many people would be concerned with his sudden departure.
I am surprised that he found the recent tone of the NG any different that the tone for the last few years. The only difference I can see if the rearrival of Skipper. Which could easily be handled with a filter. My guess is he just got burned out the lack of boating posts and the constant OT trolling political cut and paste.

Smithers' entire existence here consists of direct or indirect insults of those he doesn't like. He loves to play "who me?" when he's not playing straight man in order to draw out some new victims.

Don, I don't start OT threads, and don't bring OT posts into on topic posts. In the last few years we have seen many people leave, their absence has never changed the tone of rec.boats. Let Harry take a week's vacation, and the tone changes immediately. The problem today is even when Harry is on vacation he posts to rec.boats 8 hrs. a day.

So you say Harry is solely responsible for the direction this newsgroup follows. That's almost a backhanded compliment...that he has such a hugh influence no one else can re-direct or re-energize the group. Good thing Harry isn't pushing religion....y'all be praying at a new church.

Smithers' intent is obvious, and has been for a long time.
