You can get a 2.5 HP from Mercury, etc. You can also go electric. MinnKota used to have an "electric outboard" that was rated at about 2 HP. How far are you going and in what kind of water? In a river, forget electric as your only motor.

If you can find an old Seagull engine, they are amazing.... rebuild in 1 hour, rebuild carb in 5 min. They used to be very common because they were WWII surplus from England and so light, cheap and simple. I like the weed eater idea.... ever been to Thailand and seen the long tails? I think you may have something here..... In Thailand they use a V4 (0r 6 or 8) with a long shaft balance so that they steer the whole engine etc.
