 A 34 meter ( 110 ' ) Fairmile. This ex-Canadian Navy Anti Submarine Vessel
belonged to a friend of mine. He bought it hoping to convert it to a
private yacht. A very fast boat when the guns and armament were removed.
This was more than 30 years ago. I have no idea where this boat is now.

The command bridge was approximately 15 feet above the water. I was at the
helm of the vessel on a crossing of Lake Ontario from Toronto to Port
Weller. The owner took control of the dockage. The Fairmile is a very
responsive vessel and extremely quick. I would estimate the top speed
during part of the crossing was a little more than 25 knots.

Largest vessel I have ever piloted
http://www.destroyersonline.com/usndd/ddg39/ddg39his.htm?

The largest vessel I've ever been in command of was an ~80' topsail
schooner. The owner was too intimidated to sail her, so he he allowed me to.

The largest boat I have owned was a 41' custom racing sloop, bought
extremely cheap from the original owner who did not win any races with
her and was disgusted.

I had a similar experience. A local doctor bought an old classic sailing
vessel built between the World Wars, fixed it up and used it for the harbour
tourist tours in the summer and chartering in the Virgin Islands in the
winter. On summer, my life long friend was the captain, and the October day
before they were about to leave for Tortola, he/crew me & owner took the
boat for an afternoon sail to check some equipment. As soon as we got away
from the busy area he handed the ships wheel to me.
This boat, the Polaris was over 100 feet long and my friend used to brag it
was the biggest sailing vessel in the harbour that summer...after 'Bluenose
II' It sure was easy to over compensate steering when you are used to a
tiller.

Identity theft is pretty low no matter what form it takes. Pretty much
the sign of a coward who doesn't what anyone to know you they really

manage filters section to enable the filter. Unless Tuuk changes his
identity I won't have to read his rantings.

Message filters is what I use, and have been using for some time. Took
me a few tries when I first started using that feature to figure it out,
but I did and it works for me with a minimum of "muss and fuss." Takes
about two seconds, for example, to add the latest "Smith" iteration in
there.

It was six of them actually, and yes, it definitely was cool.

I belong to a sailing organization in the north east that occasionally
organizes events for members. Sometime back in the early '90s we
arranged to charter 6 of the older 12 meters that are still sailing
out of Newport, Rhode Island. For about $150 each we got all 6 for
the weekend, along with a couple of support boats. About 100 of us
showed up, and we took turns racing them around short courses in lower
Naraganset bay, rotating to a different boat after every race. I got
to skipper all of them over the course of the weekend. Trying to
recall the names, I'm coming up with Gleam, Northern Light, American
Eagle, Weatherly and two others whose names I forget, possibly
Nefertiti and Easterly.

There are several things that stand out in my mind about the whole
experience. One, was the awe that I felt being at the helm of these
magnificent and incredibly powerful antique boats. Second, was the
momentum and large turning radius. Compared to a modern fin keeled
sloop, even 55 to 60 footers which I have also sailed, the 12 meter
boats are VERY unmaneuverable. At the marks it was necessary to
actually start the turn well before the bow arrived. I was nervous as
a hawk during pre-start jockeying for position, and to be honest,
never felt totally comfortable at the helm.

Oh yes - it's always fun trying to get out East Passage with those
antique twelve meter yachts zigging here and zagging there playing
big time racing.

A couple of well placed TOW missiles is next on my list of equipment
upgrades. :>)

I'm sure it was Nefertiti. I was a sail hand, along with a couple of
other Sea Scouts on Nefertiti in the early '60s when Hood owned the
boat. He kept it at the Graves State Street yard in Marblehead. I
think, and my memory is probably failing me, that Nefertiti was a
trials boat and never meant to actually race for the Cup.

All I know is that they keep getting in the way going out East
Passage. :>)

It's fun though when you are out around South Beach near Seal Rock and
watching the 12 meter boats return from where ever. All the crew
lined up on the windward side rail as that big beast runs by.
Beautiful.

Aha! I've seen that in magazines. Looks really great!

Short Wave Sportfishing wrote:> Oh yes - it's always fun trying to get out East Passage with those> antique twelve meter yachts zigging here and zagging there playing> big time racing.>

Well, at lest they're not trailing fishing lines, and they're usually
looking where they're going.

I got>>to skipper all of them over the course of the weekend. Trying to>>recall the names, I'm coming up with Gleam, Northern Light, American>>Eagle, Weatherly and two others whose names I forget, possibly>>Nefertiti and Easterly.>

Sounds about right. IIRC Gleam is the one with varnished topsides. All
of them are beautiful, though.
I'm sure it was Nefertiti. I was a sail hand, along with a couple of> other Sea Scouts on Nefertiti in the early '60s when Hood owned the> boat. You're memory isn't failing you, unless mine is failing me in the same
way. That sounds accurate, Nefertiti & American Eagle are both Ted Hood
designs, AE designed to contend for the Cup and Nefertiti just as a
trial horse.

I can understand. It would take a lot of getting used to... actually I

All I know is that they keep getting in the way going out East> Passage. :>)>
It's fun though when you are out around South Beach near Seal Rock and> watching the 12 meter boats return from where ever. All the crew> lined up on the windward side rail as that big beast runs by.> Beautiful.>

Modern racers are pretty too, but in a different way. Those old boats
look graceful... somehow more harmonious...

You have nothing to fear from me. Most of my rancor is directed at
rightwing extremists who are helping to destroy the United States of
America. Note I said "extremists," not Republicans. I have no problems
with those Republicans who post here and whose politics are not based on
neocon lunacy, racism, or drooling stupidity.

If I had my druthers, participants would not be able to post on usenet
without their real name appearing in their headers, and their real ISP
being identified, too. That one step would improve the behavior of the
droolers here. But it isn't going to happen.

Stay well.
