Mother accused of leaving child in car, shops with dog

04:32 PM Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday, December 12, 2006

By 3TV and azfamily.com staff

A Valley woman was arrested Monday night and accused of child endangerment
after allegedly leaving her sleeping child in the car while she shopped at
Scottsdale Fashion Square.

According to Scottsdale police, Gardenia Johansson pulled up to Neiman
Marcus at about 3 p.m. Monday and asked a valet attendant to watch her car.
When the attendant asked Johansson where the vehicle was, she pointed to a
black 2002 BMW and began to walk away.

While walking away, Johansson, who is allegedly a Montessori school teacher,
reportedly said to the attendant, "My baby's in there." The attendant asked
Johansson if she just said there was a baby in the car and she reportedly
said yes and asked him if she thought it was wrong. The attendant replied he
thought it was wrong.

Johansson then reportedly walked into the store carrying a small dog. The
attendant went over to the car and noticed a small child sleeping in the
back seat. Not knowing what to do, the attendant called his mother, who
recommended he call security or police. He contacted security, who in turn
called Scottsdale police.

At about 3:30 p.m., Johansson was reportedly seen walking out of the store.
She told officers she had run into the store to pick up a gift because the
store had reportedly been calling her about it. She said she went to the
children's department of Neiman Marcus to pick up a gift, but that it had
not been gift-wrapped and that she agreed to pick it up the next day. While
leaving the kids' department, Scottsdale police say, the suspect entered the
cosmetics department where an employee was holding some items for her.

When an officer asked her about the contents of her bag, she said she had
not picked up the gift, but instead picked up makeup.

After being cuffed, Johansson reportedly asked the officer to go into the
store and pick up the Christmas gift. Johansson also reportedly told the
officer that she ran into a friend inside the store, who had a child the
same age as her own, and talked to her for about five minutes.

Johansson also stated to the officer that the staff members of Neiman Marcus
were happy that she did not bring her child into the store because he always
runs around and creates a nuisance.

HEY! No anti-teacher comments please. She's an 'alleged' teacher, like in
someone was 'allegedly born'!

Yes...what's up with teachers nowadays?
We see many examples of bad behavior from our own newsgroup substitute.

Nope, not even close, Don. Not a promo, not a gizmo. But it *will* work on
my new large boat, when I get it.

Don, you and Harry and Basskisser make a great team. You've shown what bad
behavior is all about.

Don,
You seem to be upset about not having a royal flamefest in rec.boats. I
am glad you and Bassy have found each other.

Harry, it looks like JimH has left your little group, but with you and
Basskisser for support, Don's probably not looking for Jesus!

Must admit.. after rolling in the mud with a handful of the motley
characters here, I feel a need to go confess my sins.
Priest would probably tell me to wash my keyboard and stay away from
temptation.

That is great to see you will not be rolling in the mud anymore.

Who said that?
We need righteous people who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty
fighting the 'dark side'.

Well Don, since it is obvious that you and Bassy come here for the same
reason, all I have to say is Bye-Bye.

I don't get Smithers actions here. He must see the half dozen characters
who are only here to agitate and stir s*it. I don't see him saying a
thing to that group who seem to have great fun provoking you.
