Gasoline Prices - How much at the docks?

JimH 4 March 2005 17:06:01
Gasoline prices jumped at my local BP yesterday from $1.74/gallon to $1.95.
I am sure the price is even higher today. The news reported that prices can
go to $2.50/gallon by spring.

This is really bad news not only for drivers but for boat owners as you
could be paying over $3/gallon at the docks this spring.

What is the price now at your local gas station? How much at your docks?

As of this morning, gas hasn't gone up at the gas station, but, I heard
on the radio this morning that it will, and it's going to be a shocker.

If you have to ask the price ----- you can't afford it.

My marina isn't selling gas right now, but if they were it would be for
$2.35/gal.

When I want fish, I go to the local market. :-)

It is the 3-4 hour runs down to near JimH and Wally that gets expensive.

Our gas prices jumped from $1.85 to $2.09. We trailer our boat wherever
we go so we don't have to worry about the higher prices for it on the
water. Just paying the prices at the roadside pumps will be bad enough!

I topped off with B20 a couple of weeks ago. The price was $2.39 a
gallon, but I saved 10 cents a gallon by purchasing over 100 gallons.

B20 sells at a premium over pure dino diesel, which would have probably
cost $2.19 before discount.

I'm sure that if I checked today prices would be up substantially.

I expect to see 75-cent increases in our local diesel and gas prices
within the next 6-8 weeks. Unleaded premium gas will blow right past $3
at roadside gas stations.......maybe approach $4 at the fuel dock.

When I was in Quito, Equador 2 weeks ago, gas was $1.03 gallon, Diesel #2
about $0.97. Guide said it was $0.37 gallon in Venezuela. Here I paid
$2.19 last week for Diesel, and I see gas was about $2.11

When the season ended last fall the marina where I keep my boat was
charging $2.169 not that bad overall. Most other marinas were around
$2.40 for some reason.

Yesterday the roadside prices jumped from $1.899 to $2.099 and it is
supposedly going to jump higher over the next few days. Looks like my
boating trips will be limited in length. More short trips fewer long
ones.

Except for how choopy it gets near the bridge.....especially on weekends.
I have been thinking about moving the boat downriver.....it would make the
runs to PIB a lot cheaper.

Depends. Im aboard right now in Italy, and diesel is only $1.25
American. But even at that price, filling my two 500 gallon tanks, can
be a little pretty penny.

With all I've spent on my boat and tackle and the lack of perfect days to
get out fishing the cost of fuel is not a big factor in deciding to go where
I want to go.

Do we sometimes overreact to higher fuel prices?

You are on Lake St. Clair right? What marina was so cheap? Mine was
around 2.60 all season.

*****************

Probably.

Considering that the average guy who isn't independently wealthy will
be lucky to boat for much over 100 engine hours a year in most
climates.

Figure some guy running twin 454's, hard, into the secondaries, and
burning maybe 40- 50 gallons an hour for 100 hours. Worst case scenario
would be 4,000 to 5,000 gallons fuel burn, and since the boater won't
be running hard all the time reality is probably down under 2500
gallons for almost everybody.

At $3 a gallon, that's $7500 for fuel for a year, and even at $4 that's
$10,000. Most people should be spending far, far, less. And you are
right, by the time people spend $200,000 for a boat, $75,000 for a
diesel truck to tow it with, and $25,000 on electronics, gear,
supplies, and accessories, what difference does it really make if the
fuel costs are $5,000 a year, or $10k?

Love my diesel trawler. Visit the fuel dock twice each year (doing
120-150 engine hours of boating in our all-season climate), "whether we
need to, or not".

I am on Lake Erie, my boat is located in Bolles Harbor at Harbor
Marine. They have always offered great gasoline prices for some reason.
