My guess is somewhere in is physic he knows regardless of his efforts, he will never rise to the level of any pro in their prime and is basically happy enough with his game as it is. This paragraph strikes a chord with me, Jack. You get to a point where you know that a lot of effort and commitment is required just to stay at the level you are at and you start to wonder if it is all worth it.
At Xmas I took on a new job that takes a lot of my mental energy and since then my game has been very inconsistent. i still practice every day but my mind is not really focused on pool anymore. Then we won our year end tourney, after finishing first and we have to move up to city masters level next year. This means an even tougher field and even more commitment to stay on top of my game.
I'm not sure I have that in me right now. I'm hoping I can get the work thing more automated by the fall and can spare more of my feeble concentration for pool. I'd really like to give this division my best shot. It's only 2 division down from the top in this city.

Maybe people in the area saw him stroll out into traffic to get hit and figured it would be a bad idea for them to do the same?
Seriously, a cop was on the scene a minute and a half after it happened, and I noticed that AOL muck-raking story didn't say a word about the city's 911 logs, so I wouldn't get too worked up.

| Is there pool after surgury? Wendy 21:54:09 |
| | I had cervical spine surgury about two months ago. C-3 to C-7. Titanium plates and screws, fusion. I can look left and right ok, but it is difficult to look up and down. This was caused from genetics (?). No accident. I'm 47 years old and I practiced pool for about an hour the other night and the neck really got sore. Has anyone else experienced this kind of surgury and if so, how is the game coming along.
Thanks,
Wendy

I'm a beginner and never play or plan to play outside my own house. This is an odd assumption to make. You like pool enough to get your own table, but you think you will never want to play outside of your own house? Anyway, it sounds like you are doing the right thing. Setup some worst case obstructions to simulate where the wall is going to be and see if the table is playable enough. Its rare to have the worse case rail shot so its probably better to have a table than not.

| Keep your pinky finger off the stick John Black 02:51:29 |
| | Well, I think tonight qualifies for another ah ha moment. We've talked about keeping a loose wrist, not gripping the cue too tight, etc. I was watching a decent player play some 9-ball before I started shooting myself. I like to observe strokes, stances and pre shot routines to see if there is something new I can try. Anyway, he has his pinky finger totally off the stick verses just having a "loose" grip
When I start playing, I try this and I had a VERY good night. My stroke felt straighter, more natural and more accurate. I was making everything and I could really pound the ball or get lively action when I needed to and still make the shot. Time will tell if this is one of those techniques that makes a lasting difference or if its effect fades, but I'm anxious to get back to the table tomorrow and test drive it some more.

I prefer not to use them because it destroys the social aspect of the game and you can't hear the sounds of the game which I enjoy. However, if the music is too loud it is destroying all that anyway, so the plugs go in. If I had to choose between music to loud and no music at all, I'll definitely take no music at all. ____________________________________________________ Better to wear out than to rust out.

| Relevelling a pool table John Black 18:52:07 |
| | Well, my new table gradually went out of level over 8 or 10 months. Its not disastrous, but its enough to be annoying now. Its upstairs on carpet so it probably settled. It could also be due to a ping pong top we put on it when non-pool playing company comes over. ?
The table is a Legacy "Kelly". Should I get it professionally re- levelled or try to do it myself. Note, I know nothing about how to do it. I heard for 1 piece slates you can put napkins or stuff under legs until it levels out but this is a 3 piece slate and I heard that probably won't work. Is that right? What is a reasonable price for someone to come out and do it? Thanks.

| different cue balls Bob Keller 17:04:19 |
| | Finally back on RSB after Vegas and I see John Black asked why I had trouble with a blue circle cue ball as compared to a red circle. Sounds like a worthy discussion to me. I don't have much time right now, though. Hope to hear some from the "science guys" too.
The red circle cue ball is, I believe, lighter than the blue circle. For me this makes a huge difference in drawing the ball, the red circle comes back much easier and I think distance control is also easier. Follow shots are different also as the blue circle (being heavier) seems to "go through" the object ball easier. Playing with either is not a problem it just takes time to adjust and I have played more with the red circle, historically.
Here's an example on a bar table: http://CueTable.com/B/?@3DYLa3PNKv3XYLa2XbSd3kNKv3kYDt3kbQE4kJdf4kbQu2kbNS2kPMp@ The CB path shown is easy with a red circle cue ball. But with the blue circle you'll probably scratch in the corner pocket using the same stroke as with the red circle.

| Just Curious (2) Dean Boulding 21:23:06 |
| | All,
Lou's recent thread on playing better or worse with age has triggered something in my mind that I've been wondering about for a while: Are people who are good at other sports generally better at pool? Do they start out a little ahead?
It seems to make sense to me that sports where folks with better eye-hand coordination might start off from a better place than the less coordinated of us. My experience is that this may be so, but not 100%. Of course, given the way we all tend to put on weight, but in hugely different amounts, makes it hard to judge how athletic someone was when younger.
Any thoughts?

| I just wanted to say thanks!!! Thyme3421 01:23:07 |
| | League season's over for a couple weeks, so last night I went to a different hall to practice. I started out with throwing balls out and knocking them in... then I set up the break shot from Corey's run's... the side pocket one.
Got a really good spread, then missed a few shots... then RAN A NEW HIGH RUN!!! WHOOOOOOOTTTY TOOTY!!!
I ran 43, then got funny and had to bank a ball into what turned out to be a dead rail. This shot is what I call the "terminal phase" of the run.
Just wanted to say thanks (and brag a little) I feel that I ran the run because of the discussions we've had here. The "9ball situation" post's from Wei had a lot to do with it... and the videos of Allison, Jennette, Corey, etc have helped a ton too. The talks about A-B-C balls came to mind many times over
Lou.... Lou lou lou.... the small changes of english that you mentioned what... a week ago? That made a big improvement in my techniques for developing a break ball to get into the next rack.
So THANKS everyone!!! this group is great

| SVB in CO Bob Keller 23:29:36 |
| | Guess who is playing in our local big-table weekly 9-ball tournament tonight? Only the reigning US Open Champ SVB! He's here for the Colorado bar table 9-ball championship this weekend - he's the defending champ. Remember, it was only one year ago when he was relatively unknown and still considered to be a mere mortal.
Unfortunately I couldn't play, but before I left I got to see Shane make this out: he jumped the edge of the 9-ball with his full length playing cue, sending the CB 2 rails for perfect position and then deposited the 9-ball combo center pocket. Sigh............. The guy is smooth, smooth, smooth. It doesn't matter what angle or distance of any shoot, he just hits it smooth!

| Pool in Wilmington DE Mark0 19:26:45 |
| | In my most Lou like fashion, I'm looking for info on the best pool rooms in the area and to see there are if any RSB-ers that might want to bunt balls around for a couple of hours in the evening. My alignment problem has gone away so I might be able to play my best C level game (if my leg pain doesn't shut me down). Anyone?
