Pat and I played our ladder match and he won 9 to 6. We played at Chris's Billiards on a very tight table. For the first five games, people we knew kept walking up to us starting conversations (I think we were both annoyed). Pat got up 4 or 5 to zero in short order. Then he was up 7 to 1. Then I got back into the game to 7-5, he won the next game to get on the hill. On his hill game, he was unfortunate to have missed the 9ball, which I pocketed. The last game he ran several balls and out after a miss from me, for the match. Boy am I glad we agreed on a race to nine rather than to seven!!!
Here's the sick part about it all- nobody ever ran a rack, heck, nobody ever ran 7 balls in a row. We played so poorly it was funny. The first four games that I won, I never ran more than three balls to win the game. The first game that I won was the result of an outstanding 3/4 masse (toot toot) off the one ball and way around the seven ball: START(%AQ5V6%BK8S0%CH5L2%DF7G5%EK2M8%FI2Q3%GP4S9%HD9H7%IE4D1%PR9V8%bG2E1%cQ4 N9%dR2V2)END
I was so frustrated at that point from failing to make any decent runs, I decided that I had to start looking for the easy (or not so easy) wins. The next win for me was a not so difficult combination. The third win, a few balls. The fourth and fifth wins were ok but nothing remotely difficult or impressive...just a few balls. And the sixth win was an easy 9ball. I attributed my problems to poor aiming. I just could not for the life of me see the angles to make the balls. I rattled a bunch and missed a bunch by huge margins. Having not played pool in a long time, I was surely paralized with billiard aiming (OBs into the rails!).
Pat struggled too. He was having problems sinking balls in the beginning. After going up a few games, he settled in and started putting some great shots on me that I never expected. Basically he got in stroke. I was truly worried about being skunked 9-0. And then 9-1 after winning my first game. Pat missed a couple shots that allowed me to get back into the match, but believe me, despite the score it was Pat all the way. Overall, he played well. Had he not made a couple of unforced errors, he would have smoked me worse than he did. And believe me when I say I was handed two or three of the six games that I won. Pat continues to improve and his shot selection was outstanding I thought.
I am confident that our next matchup will be much more skillful. Being down two matches to Pat might inspire me to practice a little pool in the coming months and re-challenge him.
Deno -beaten, but will still take some of Lou's 10-5 action when he gets the nerve to come up here...

I don't think Deno had played at all for months, but he still beat me 6-3 in the second half of the match. By then it looked like we were playing with our cases rather than our sticks. I think it's just very hard to do anything but socialize when RSBers get together.
After the match we hung around and debated squirt and swerve with a coupla Chris's resident entrepreneurs. The subject of upright vs. downlow aiming never came up. I'm sure the score on that would have been much more lopsided.

By the way, since I won and Deno was already below me on the ladder, there's no movement for either of us, right? Does the score matter?
Oh, Ron...

Apparently Bob Jewett is keeping track of the scores as well and folding them into some sort of handicap rating... did you send them to... ladder@sfbilliards.com?
I sent mine to the ladder but things haven't been changed yet. I'm in no hurry. LOL
