 860 or Championship Tournament?
I think the league tables here have Championship Tournament,
but I can't get a straight answer about that. I need a new cloth,
And wondered if someone had some comments or comparisons
between the two.

I really like 860, but it wore out in 6 months. I currently have
Championship 3030 and it is lasting longer.

Gorina Granito (Basalt) and 860 are your best choices. The rap on
Championship cloth
is that it's inferior (looser weave, more defects). Though I have no first
hand experience with it, people on this board (whose opinions I value) have
posted such. Prolly a little Googling would unearth it. HTH

Hokay...860 it is. Swatches will be sent Monday.
That caution about colors "might be off" on a computer monitor is
right! Wifey would like me to do a little better in the color choice this
time.

i have championship 3030 on my table, no its not equal to simonis.

but its still a good cloth for a home table, though today you can buy
simonis for the same price. when i bought mine simonis was $40 higer and
mail order only. i bought the 3030 at a local shop.

i happy with it and have not noticed any defects in the cloth.

cheers
jerry

I know this isn't a popular opinion but I think Granito is the better
quality of the two (860 and Basalt) having compared them side by side
before buying mine.

Interestingly, as I think I once mentioned on this board, I showed the
Granito swatches to my neighbor (who was a tailor for 70 years) and he
immediately told me that the Granito was made in Spain, that it was
worsted. He also told me the weight correctly, and the thread-count
which I had to take his word for. He said they used to use a similar
black cloth for making men's winter suits in the pre WW2 era. He said
it should wear like iron. So far so good (5 years and counting).

I think Granito is slightly faster than 860, but both are great to
play on.

You are right IMO. All the stuff about the clothing fabric is correct. In
fact, it is still a majority of Gorina's business selling clothing fabric to
top designers including Brioni. Grantio M, the carom cloth, is very much
like the fabric Brioni uses to make tuxedos, some of which comes from
Gorina. Granito has a better weave IMO and plays well longer IMO. The
difference is subtle which is why I have always put the two in the same
category. Championship isn't even a close third to these two.

Admit it, David: you bought Granito because it reminded you of dessert.

Maybe a little...

There was someone on RSB at the time (?) who was a rep for Gorina
extolling its virtues at the time. Can't recall who.

That would be me. I ran the U.S. Division of Gorina here in Chicago.

In that case, thanks, Deno... buying the Basalt was one of the best
things I ever did with regard to pool equipment...

I second that, I am very happy with the Basalt on my table.

Incidentally I just had a suit made last month ($ouch) and I was looking
through the bolts of cloth at the tailors. I was surprised to find out
that Gorina makes worsted wool cloth for suits as well as Granito
Basalt. That was probably a bit naive, they likely make more garment
cloth than anything else but I don't get a lot of suits made.

I installed the Basalt myself and I had a really good look so while I
was at the tailors I found myself looking through the cloths and
wondering how they would play! They look and feel very much the same as
my pool table cloth.

Maybe I should have ordered a few extra yards for next time the table
needs cloth. Black table cloth would be cool, except maybe for losing
the eightball. In fact, maybe a pinstriped table would be even more
interesting.

By the way David, where did you get the Basalt from? I could not find
any reasonable price on it in Canada so I had to order it from a US
website. I think it was Muellers but I am not positive. Exchange was
higher then (2 years ago?) but it was still about half price after all
the government hands took their share.

The guy who built and covered the table (Richard Lane) had Mali,
Forester, Simonis and Granito in his stock and charged me about 1 1/2
times what he charges for Mali. Can't recall how much I paid exactly.

I got my first Granito Basalt directly from Deno and love it. It's easily
the fastest and most flawless cloth I've ever played on or worked with. When
a friend saw it, he wanted his table covered with the same, but by that time
Deno had handed the business off to Jon Spiegel who was as easy to work with
as Deno was. When I ordered for my friend, I got another piece for myself
which is still rolled on a cardboard tube. The toll free number I have for
Jon is 800 465 4900. I recall the price was lower than I found it anywhere
else.

Bruce, you are also in Canada. Were you not able to find a canadian
source either? Deno is in the US isn't he?

Also, I was wondering if you were any relation to Bud and Kasey Boyd.
