 I have watched off and on and seen some great pool. I have seen the 9 ball
several times and have been amazed that they are "racking" without a rack.
Does anyone know why or for that matter how?

 I've seen this done before on Sardo-trained tables. The "training" involves
pounding all the balls in the rack into place prior to using the Sardo
itself. Once this is done some people like to just roll the balls into these
divots and not bother with the Sardo itself.
