Backspin, problem solved-well sort of.

Paul B 24 April 2005 08:18:30
 Hi folks,

I posted a few weeks back saying hello and asking solutions to the
backspin problem I'm experiencing on my table, the problem being the cue
ball just dies and won't come back.

I played on a couple of pub tables and could backspin no probs.

Eventually I got a smaller que ball and "violins" I can backspin on my
table now. Not just backspin but direct that little cueball sucker all
around the table. I find with the smaller que ball I play better, play
more accurately and have more confidence. But now for the question. It's
my table and I can play it how I want but what are the rules for queball
size vs object ball size in the real bad old world?

Cheers,

Paul

The full equipment specs are here:

The short answer is that all the balls should be the same size and
weight.

On every set. There's a pattern:

PRIMARY COLORS
1 9Yellow
210Blue
311Red

SECONDARY COLORS
412Purple (Blue + Red)
513Orange (Yellow + Red)
614Green (Yellow + Blue)

TERTIARY COLOR
715Maroon (Purple + Red?)

8Black

Also:
- odd = warm colors (yellow, red, orange, maroon)
- even = cool colors (blue, purple, green, black)

And of course if you add any of the solid 1 - 7 balls to 8 ("neutral black")
it will give you the color of the striped 9 - 15 balls. 3 (red) plus 8 = 11
(also red) and so on.

Hmmmm I was afraid someone would say that but last night I had a guest
who seemed to know about pool tables etc. and it seems I may need to
iron the felt as he commented the table is very slow.

So hopefully the ironing will improve things and I can return to a
regulation white ball.

Anybody know the techniques for ironing a table? Can I do my shirts and
undies at the same time?

No seriously can I use a standard iron on low dry heat directly on the
felt or do I put a sheet on top and iron over that or is a domestic iron
the wrong thing altogether?

TIA

Paul.

I know I said I wasn't going to maintain it but could this be a prime
candidate for number one on the RSB 'irony' ladder?

Pltrgyst?

In the US, the tables are often covered with cloth that has no
nap. It is very, very rare for anyone to iron the cloth.
I don't think ironing will help your draw.
