trouble with draw shot

Gollum 5 April 2005 00:58:03
When i shoot the draw shot, i either jump the cue ball or the ball
goes forward but has no spin at all, even though i hit it below
center. Any ideas on what i can do to correct this?

Sounds to me like you are poking the cueball, not stroking through it
When setting up your hand bridge, try imagining the cue ball a few inches
furthur away and force that cuetip towards the imaginary farther away
cueball

This is good advice, but it might not be apparent why. Following
through ensures that your stroke will be as straight as possible, which
helps to ensure that you'll hit the cue ball as low as you want to.
That's probably the crux of your problem: your stroke isn't developed
to the point yet that you're actually hitting the cue ball where you
intend to most of the time. In fact, you could get massive draw without
following through at all, but you probably can't hit the right spot on
the cue ball that way (except occasionally by chance).

The other possible problem to pay attention to: not chalking well
before every shot.

A couple of years ago I was "jumping" the cue ball and Bob jewett suggested
using a "flat" hand bridge. This helped me to eliminate the "jump" and
follow through got the cue ball to come back and the object ball to go in.

It just takes time and practice.

If you can normally draw the CB, but sometimes the ball jumps, the problem
is not chalking well.

You need to chalk very good around the sides of your tip. Examine your tip
under the light and be sure there are no dark spots. "Rub" the chalk on by
sliding the chalk across the tip and all sides of the tip.

Very important to chalk well before each draw shot.

Next practice with a striped ball as the cue ball. Hit the striped ball
with draw. Level cue, *slow* hit, follow through until tip touches cloth on
table 6 inches past where ball was. Then leave your tip touching the cloth
for 4 seconds. Have someone watch you to be sure you are following through
6 inches past where the ball was and leaving your tip touching the cloth
for 4 seconds.

Again - *slow* stroke! And chalk before each shot, especially sides of tip.

Next watch striped ball initially rotate backwards, then begin to slide,
then begin a forward roll.

The ball needs to be rolling backwards when it hits the object ball for it
to draw backwards!

If the object ball is far down the table and the cue ball is rolling
forward when it hits the object ball, you will not get any draw.

Thus it is more difficult to get draw on an object ball further away. Try
placing the object ball 1 diamond away from the cue ball to practice your
draw shots.

Practice with the striped ball and see how far you can make it go while
still rotating backwards. More speed, a lower hit, and chalking before each
shot will get more draw.

I think every new pool player has this problem at first and it's
always due to not actually hitting the cue ball where you think you're
hitting it.

What helped me (quite a few years ago) was

1. look at the cue ball not at the object ball to be more precise
about where you are placing the tip
2. plenty of chalk
3. dime shaped tip
4. follow though - I actually threw the cue at the cue ball (let go of
it altogether like a slip stroke) for a while

And, as Billy Bob suggested use a striped ball or a training ball so
you can see what spin is being generated.

Now keep doing it over and over again until it feels natural.

The next step is to be able to draw it back a pre-determined precise
distance. A good drill for this is to set up an object ball near the
corner pocket and put the cue ball at the first diamond and hit draw
shots that return the cue ball 1, 2, 3 diamonds. If the table doesn't
have diamonds, use sticky spots or tape.

By the way, can you please go get me my drink? I don't have a ladder
anymore (Jewett has it) and I'm too old to shin up drain-pipes like I
used to...
