What's up with these UPA scheduling conflicts?

Dana Bufalo 3 April 2005 17:33:39
I saw the following Press Release on Inside Pool's site and wonder why this
happens.., This is not the first time the UPA has scheduled an event on the
same date or during the same time another (non-sanctioned UPA) pro event or
major regional event is being held..

What's up with these Charlie Williams/UPA scheduling conflicts?

2005 Masters 9-Ball Championships Rescheduled Due to Conflicting Dates
Press Release:

The following press release was issued by Barry Berhman, Promoter 2005
Masters 9-Ball Championships

Due to a Charlie Williams/Dragon Productions UPA event that was just
announced, The 2005 Masters 9-Ball Championships will be rescheduled. Dates
will be released very soon. We announced the Masters Dates (May 24-28) in
December 2004 then Scott Smith (Tournament Director) announced this event at
the Derby City Classic (January), the Super Billiards Expo (March) and many
other stops. We did our homework on date investigating and apologize for
any inconveniences this may cause.

This is unfortunate that I promoted this event for over 3 months and had to
find out the other day from Scott Smith (Masters Tournament Director and UPA
Tournament Director) who was also unaware until a few days ago about Mr.
Williams event. I am sure Mr Williams heard the announcements at the Derby
City Classic and Valley Forge and said nothing to me or Scott Smith until
last week. Unfortunately this hurts the players and the fans of our game.

All entries and seat sales will be immediately reimbursed.

Well no, because this is EXACTLY one of the tactics that Don Mackey
used when he destroyed professional pool in the mid 90's. What
Charlie Williams is doing now, 10 years later, by adopting the same
sorry tactics is sweeping some of the broken glass from one pile to
another, but the real damage was done before Charlie Williams was
even a professional player.

$.02 -Ron Shepard <--IMO, of course

It's a sad day when some people only think of themselves, rather than the
sport, the fans and the players. It's one way thinking and does nothing
except hurt everybody trying to promote pool.

These type of antics will push pool further into a downward spiral.
