all in all dissapointing

Jaybyrd 28 March 2005 17:46:09
Now that the final four is here I'm dissapointed with my team this year.
I can also relate to what the duke fans must be feeling when their
archrival does much better than them. Now I only hope that Taft and/or
Krauser do not opt for the NBA draft and that they can find some sort of
spark and regroup (and brace for better teams coming in to the
conference). Dixon will be in the hot seat more next year, and more
trips to NYC are in order.

Yes, it is distressing that Maryland has made it to the NIT Final Four.

According to Norm R, Pitt's going to find recruiting in NYC a tad more difficult
than it was previously.

I'm curious what Jarvis and his staff might have done to alienate
the local HS programs. Bearing in mind that I, a semi-literate
Big Ten homer, haven't been keeping up to date on this, would
you please enlighten me?

Just curious,

You're right about one thing: Jarvi$ alienated almost everyone.

You're wrong about well, almost everything else. Because there never was a
"recruiting wall" around NYC; for every Chris Mullin who stayed home there were
three Stephon Marburys who got away. But it didn't really matter, because there
was such a plethora of homegrown talent that SJU only had to get two or three a
year to stay competitive. Whereas under Jarvi$ SJU got none a year. Instead they
got felons like Abe Keita, who Jarvis paid $300 under the table a month and who
committed more fouls over the course of his career than he scored points.

From what *I* hear, NR and staff are everywhere in the city, all the time. And
if NR's first full incoming class is any indication -- a top 25 in Anthony Mason
Jr, a top 100 in Ricky Torres, allegedly the best shooter to come out of NYC in
10 years, who, incidentally, chose SJU over Pitt, some 7' Lithuanian with an
alleged jump shot, and Dunbar High's Aaron Spears (transfer from Illinois) --
he's done pretty well. And oh yeah, a 2006 commit from projected McDonald's AA
Doug Wiggins. Not bad, considering he's not even a year into the job.

Didn't USF beat Cinci this year?

USF's coach is the guy who took Western Michigan to the Sweet 16 a
couple of years back. I would wait and see how the South Floridians
do in the Big East for a couple of years before deeming them perpetual
also-rans.

I think that NR is on track to turn St Johns around, no doubt. But> based on what I've heard here and there, the damage that Jarvis did> sounds like it is deep seated and will take time to undo.

SJU has been in NYC for 150 years. Jarvis was there for 5, 3 if you count the
time he spent at the track. So I'm thinking it may not take as much time as you
seem to think:

"As far as reconnecting with city coaches and the AAU programs, I would give
them a grade of an A," St. Raymond's coach Oliver Antigua said.

Roberts began by attending the first Catholic league coaches meeting held after
he was hired. "He wanted to make sure he got to know all of us and told us St.
John's was our program. I was really impressed with that," Antigua said. "From
that day on he's been active and involved and calling coaches and inviting them
to his office and stopping by open gyms and saying hello."

In six years at St. Raymond's, Antigua never was invited to St. John's until
Roberts got the job. Christ the King coach Bob Oliva has seen Roberts four times
since June; Oliva said Jarvis came to CK's gym once in his five-plus years. Gary
Charles, coach of the summer powerhouse Long Island Panthers, was conducting
practice with his 15-and-under team when Roberts called to invite them to Alumni
Hall.

"Going to St. John's University and sitting in front of the head coach on his
couch and him saying, 'Maybe one day you'll be wearing this uniform,' made them
feel good," Charles said. "He was planting seeds for the future."

Roberts and his staff -- Glenn Braica, Fred Quartlebaum and Jose "Chuckie"
Martin also are metro area natives -- have been planning for the immediate
future, too. At least one of them was present at every Panthers summer game they
were allowed to attend. Antigua said Roberts was the most visible head coach
recruiting St. Ray's star Ricky Torres. The attention paid dividends. Torres, a
6-5 guard who averaged 14 points and six rebounds last season, committed to St.
John's last month.

well he HAS to say that.

Norm Roberts recruited the current Illinois team, and assistant coach Fred
Quartlebaum recruited the current NC team. So, considering the fact that SJU
slapped Pitt around the garden this year while starting three late signee
freshman and a walk-on, you'd better hope you're right.

1-18-05, MSG, 2006 Wooden Award winner Daryl Hill dropped 26 on Carl "We own
Madison Square Garden" Krauser as the Johnnies spanked # 17 PU 65-62. And yes,
for SJU a 3 point victory does in fact qualify as a spanking.

the ol blind squirrel and nut rule applies. Although I'm sure that the

You sure are chippy for a Johnnies fan ;-)

My broad's a chippie. I'm chipper. Norm seems to have a pretty huge upside. I
haven't felt this good since Fraschilla dropped his drawers and shook his pee
pee at Ron Artest.

Speaking of SJU, have there> any been any discussions of replacing that glorified high school gym> you play in with a decent on-campus facility?

"The $23 million construction project will largely benefit the school's men and
women's basketball teams, but with new workout facilities and recreational
basketball courts, the student body and faculty will also profit. ... The Riley
Field House, a two-story, 38,000-square-foot structure which is slated to be
completed in September, 2005, will be attached to the west entrance of Alumni
Hall next to the tennis courts. The facility will house four full-size
basketball courts, including two specifically for the men and women's basketball
teams. "

Fraschilla WHAT?

Rumor has it he dropped trou one day in practice brandished his thinger as a
motivational er tool.

You'd better hope Norm has a huge upside, because the basketball-onlys> are going to be saying bye-bye to UConn, Pitt, Cuse, WVU, Louisville,> Cinni, South Florida and Rutgers (can't happen soon enough).

I don't understand this. Explain.

How many fans does that thing seat?

Dunno. Alumni Hall seated 6 K give or take. I'm guessing bigger than that.
