Have people stopped doing this in basketball?

I've wondered that several times this year, with regard to several
games by several teams.

The high- arching mid- range shot to deal with some rebound- monster
lurking under the basket seems to be dead as well.

Actually after the second trey (that Azebuike missed) would have been a
good time to foul (<3 seconds...)

Why do you space after mid-compound hyphens? It's nonstandard.
You make it look like a computer-generated justification of text
formerly abounding in carriage return-terminal lines.

Could that result in an unintended 3 point play? Maybe not too often?

No, foul them when they're nowhere near the act of shooting;> immediately after the in-bounds pass, for example.

Because then they hit two, steal your inbounds pass, and win the game. Or
they hit two, foul you, you miss, they call timeout and go the length of
the court for the win. Or they hit one, miss the second, rebound it, and
put it in to tie. Or the guy sees it coming and heaves a shot and you
can't stop in time and he gets three shots. Or you screw up and get it
called as an intentional foul (or a flagrant foul). Or you wiff and the
guy gets an uncontested three because you aren't playing defense.

Lots of reasons, but we've had this debate here before. There's no
conclusive evidence that it *actually* increases your odds of winning.

I've never seen this, but isn't an intentionallly-missed free throw
possible? Say you hit the first one but are still down by two with zip
time left....couldnt you throw it as hard as possible off the backboard
so it's a long rebound to yourself, hopefully. I know it's no anutomatic
rebound, but you'd have a better chance at another shot than banking on
an inbounds steal, aina?

The intentional miss is something I'd try down two with only one free throw
and little time, but you do HAVE TO HIT THE RIM. That makes it much harder
to pull off. It's fairly often the shooter actually doesn't hit any rim
when trying this, and in that case it's the other team's ball.

What's even funnier is when the shooter is trying to miss and hits the
thing by accident. I think that's happened a couple times this year and
seems to happen about once a season somewhere in college at least.

It happened at the end of the Iowa-MSU game in the Big Ten
tournament--Iowa had a walk-on shooting free throws with just a couple
of ticks left on the clock. He was deliberately trying to miss the
second FT in order to make it harder for MSU to get a last-second
shot.

He ended up banking it in off the backboard.

It's happened a couple times in the NBA. Antoine Walker is good at this
stuff. He missed the first, so he had to miss the second, so he ended
up banking it in.
