How Are They Going To Handle This?

George W . Harris 21 March 2005 12:43:10
UNC and NC State are both playing in the
Syracuse regional.

Duke is playing in the Austin regional.

The semifinals for both regionals are on Friday
night.

So, that's three games involving teams from the
triangle, all served by the same CBS affiliate, which
naturally can only show two games.

Somebody's fans are going to be pissed off.

Considering that UNC is unique among tourney teams in having a perfect
Academic Progress rating from the NCAA, you may not want to go there....

Not as pissed as I was when they didn't show Spring Break Shark Attack!

I believe the three major markets (Charlotte, Triangle, Triad) all have
UPN, WB or independent stations that may negotiate deals with CBS.

The conflict is the early games - Duke-Michigan State and NCSU-Wisconsin.
I imagine the "feature" game would be Duke-MSU, so look for the Pack to
get bumped.

Wait 'til BMo, Boone, and Fing count against you.

(Not that that proves anything, particularly since they all did
graduate (?) from their transferee institution, but they currently
do/will count against UNC.)

I can't believe they'd bump NC State in the Raleigh market.

Well, Duke and NC State appear to overlap. But Duke's fan base is in
New Jersey. The CBS Affiliate is in Raleigh as opposed to Durham. NC
State should win out.

The Duke game is being shifted to the local Fox affiliate (which the
CBS affiliate also owns).

If so, it would boil down to being out of touch with the populous.
Duke has many fans through-out the country, but they are relatively
thin in the Triangle Area. I'd bet there are 5 State fans for every
Duke fan in the WRAL veiwing area.

Duke goes to the Sweet 16 every year. State's down
to once or twice a decade. Give them their two hours...

Isn't WRAL located like across the street from the RBC Center?

A mile or two from RBC, but directly across the street (Western
Blvd) from campus. Actually, in between the main campus and the new
Centennial campus.

Nope. It's right across the street from the campus, though. The RBC
Center is a few miles away, beside the Fairgrounds and Carter-Finley.

In another bit of bad timing, the Harlem
Globetrotters are performing in the RBC Center in
Raleigh this coming Friday. I'm thinking the crowd's
gonna be a little sparse.

"Once or twice" is slightly generous. Their last three times playing
in the round of 16 were in 1974, 1983, and 1989. Course, 67% of the
time they get to the round of 16, they end up with a championship.

(How's that for cherry-picking?)

They made the Elite 8 (and hence the Sweet 16) in 1985 and 1986 as
well.

That drops them down to 40% of the time.
