Rasheed exposes Portland's foolishness

Said Wallace: "I know, as far as myself, ain't nothing changed about me but
the weather. I'm still the same person I was out in Portland, but it's a
different environment out there.

"The environment here is more helpful. The environment out there was more
hurtful. That was one of the drawbacks of being the only professional team
in town. Here you have us and the Tigers and the Lions, so there are other
professional sports to share it with.

"There are people back in Portland still mad at me that I left. It doesn't
really bother me too much. My cousin still lives there, and I keep tabs on
him. They still talk about me. They tried to use me as a scapegoat for their
team and with their demise.

"Here, I think it's to the point where you have to respect what we did last
year, being part of a championship team. To me, that's a big thing."

OK, Rasheed. So the "environment" in Portland made you get all those
technical fouls, fight with an official on the loading dock, smoke dope in
the car (on the road!), and generally fail to be a leader on a team where he
was the best player.

The only reason he's doing better in Detroit is that he's now the 2nd or 3rd
option again. Wallace is a fine complementary player, and an unselfish
player. But in Portland, he should be remembered as a bad leader and as a
guy who did not deserve the contract he had.

The sum of his public displays of immaturity and petulance are that he's
just a little boy in a man's body. He was far from the worst Blazer (Kemp,
Woods, Miles, Patterson, and even Stoudamire probably have him beat), but
as the nominal, should-have-been team leader, I think he bears the greatest
responsibility for the circus that 2002-2004 became.

So now that he is the player that he always was in a team were he fits it
proves he was not the player he was supposed to be...yeah that makes
sense...

Yep, it's certainly not ALL bad with him. However, I remain incredibly
disappointed in him as a player and as a human being . . . especially given
what he was paid to be better in both departments.

Matters if you turn it into a DUI endangering others Sharing a joint is not
criminal.

Then that is your problem not his. 'Sheed's real involvement with his
foundation and 'Sheed's devotion to his family, including his custody battle
for his son and (after 'Sheed won) the year long hunt for the child when he
was kidnapped by the mother, says a lot more about 'Sheed as a human than
bad sportsmanship in arguing over calls with officials.
When it comes down to stuff like the brawl as usual he was the one with the
cool head trying to break it up.
The players that get suspensions for throwing punches are higher on my list
for bad sportsmanship.

As a player there is something to be said in a team sport for a player too
unselfish. He proved that last year and hasthe ring to show for it.
especially given what he was paid to be better in both departments.

And when he cut the Ts down from 40 to 10 did anyone give him enough
positive press to encourage him?
Must have been a dozen articles featuring the Ts when he was bad, not one
about his improvement.

Thanks for setting the record straight. Sheed is a great guy who got ran
out of town. I sorely miss his emotion on the court and here's to another
ring on his finger this year!

oh, well in that case it's ok that he did it..afterall, it's not like> a bigger man would've just let things go or nuttin..

I am not defending what he did, I am defending what he did not do. 'Fight'
sounds like more than the reality.
smoke>>> dope in the car (on the road!),>>

doesn't make it ok. If someone was doing something illegal (even if> you don't think it should be) thats not smart. Or they couldn't have> just told the driver to slow down..>

See above. I was challenging the throwing out "On the road" which made it
sound like a DUI.
I personally blame the team for that one as much as him and damon (for> letting them drive themselves home).

Oh sure... now even you sound like the portland media.. Blame the team for
lack of personal responsiblity of a player.

you see he lead the league in T's this year with 27?

Yes. But he is a long way from breaking his record. =)
The main problem was when he was getting getting tossed out of games at a
one of ten pace. It has been a long time since you expected him to end up in
the locker room if he got a T. And a T just turns up his game. I do not
support bad sportmanship but the fact remains that he uses it as motivation.
there's no secret motivation behind me saying that.

So how was that treated in the Detroit media? A federal offense and lets get
him off the team because he is a bad human?
He is right, he was a scape goat and he has proved them wrong.

Thought is was interesting when he got the community service award...Blazers
nominated him every month and the league told them to stop submitting it.
Same man with the same personality and the same foundation and charity
programs is now worthy of reward....

The league has informed the Blazers
that Wallace and the team will be fined the next
time Wallace ignores his responsibilities
to speak to members of the media.
Wallace was unavailable to comment.

Just another example of the classic change of scenery theory. When Rodney
Harrison was playing for the Chargers he was regarded as a dirty player by
many (particularly the NFL office that hands out the fines for what it deems
illegal hits & some of the pond scum that write for ESPN.com), but after he
went to the Patriots he suddenly became a "hard hitter & the kind of guy you
want on your team". Yet he & his teammates all say he hasn't changed a bit
in the way he plays.

I don't know if it's due to the team, the community, or the media (probably
some combination of the 3), but you can see it in all the major sports on a
regular basis.

Go Blazers !
