No, he's a very good example of a person who

He does have a @duke.edu eMail. He appears too stupid to know how to
modify his eMail sig. So:

1. He really is a Duke fan and the "woof" means Duke is doomed!
2. He is a UNC fan pulling a "reverse-woof" and Duke will win it all.
3. He's a UConn fan instigating the "scam-woof" and both Duke and UNC
are fillibustered into losing in the Sweet Sixteen.

Since I doubt UNC fans are clever enough for (2), and UConn is so
awesome we have no need to resort to tricks like (3), it must be
scenario (1) !!! Duke is toast!

Hi Joel -
You seem like a really neat guy - but on this thread you are coming
across sounding very bitter. Back in the old days - the 60s - I could
not even dream of going to Duke. I did not even know what a Duke was.
Daddy was a coal miner - I went to a little dinky HS - I took the SAT
once - as soon as a local state teachers' college accepted me - Dad sent
a $50 deposit in and we celebrated. I graduated and taught 33 years
within sight of that old coal mine - my kid was valedictorian - and got
a free ride to Duke. You can see my obvious prejudice. :-)
As Steve Martin said, "I was born a poor black child."

It is possible for people to hate teams for other reasons than they win
a lot. For example, I hate the Dallas Cowboys because for some reason
they think they are "America's Team". And they sure have lost a lot
lately. People still hate Notre Dame because of their arrogance - yet
they lose more than they win now. Also, I hated Duke in 1995 too - and
they lost almost every game. But that was the year Wojo was introduced
as a Polish Stockton according to the ACC media even though everyone
else knew he was nothing more than a decent backup PG AT BEST.

As for now, I don't hate Duke. UConn has beaten them 4 times a row in
great games. I did hate them back in the laettner days because I had
contacts that told me stories you would not believe. Very reliable
sources (like UConn starting players) told me that even though
Georgetown got a(deservedly so) bad rap as a "dirty" team - Duke was
much, much worse in terms of cheap shots, trash talk (as in racist and
anti-semitic) and dirty play. Anyway, water under the bridge now.

However, I DO hate (some of) their fans and the media bias. Others
hate Duke for the referee bias, but to me, that's part of the game and
why K is a great coach.

How do you think they *got* to be "America's Team"??? It sure wasn't by
finishing last a lot.

Why did Notre Dame folks get so arrogant???

Duke wasn't very far removed from a couple NCs, which is the only reason
anyone bothered to hype anyone with the likes of Wojo.

If there was not a Duke University Blue Devils - ABC and ESPN would have

Joel, consider yourself lucky that that's all you have
against Duke. I am a UNLV grad class of '70 and former
Rebel fan (1967-1977), and when we talk UNLV in the Tark era
(1973-1993) we are talking big time misbehavior, including
but not limited to the first and only (to my knowledge)
trade of college players (with Hawaii for Boyd Batts),
repeated blatant recruiting violations, boosters so much in
control of the program that a booster (Davey Pearl) actually
had a seat on the bench during games for several years, a
collusive lawsuit between Tark and the school against the
NCAA (I worked for the law firm that represented Tark but
not on that case), making an assistant coach the legal
guardian of a non-predictor recruit, and players openly
consorting with gamblers (there is a photograph of one
instance of that).

As for me, I am three times hated: I am a UNLV alumnus, a
Dukie (honorary), and a Harvard Law grad. :-)

Come on, bring on the stories!>

Stories: sure - I lived in the Basketball dorm at the time and hung out
with the players those years. In particular, some interesting stories
include the following (there are more):

1) Everyone thought Coach K was an angel at the time, but he swears
more than any other coach and makes comments to the opposing teams
players. Dean Smith did the same, but without the swearing. I guess
this has been proven out over time, so it's not really a "scoop".

2) Lattner was one of the biggest a-holes in the history of college
b-ball. He made constant anti-semetic remarks to Henefeld (Henefeld
said Laettner made Mourning look like a brownie in terms of nasty,
politically-incorrect statements). Also, the reason Sellers bashed
Laettners head in was a combination of the above and that Laettner
called Sellers "stupid ni----" throughtout game(s). Apparently Laettner
saw that the n-word bothered Sellers so he made no bones about using it
loud and clear and often. The refs did nothing despite numerous
complaints, so Sellers finally bashed his head in (see
http://www.huskieshoops.com/huskies/men/players/sellersr.php). One
thing - Sellers finally wrote a letter of apology to Coach K about the
incident. However, in the letter, and to this day, he NEVER apologized
to Laettner - only Coach K. This was supposed to be a
"read-between-the-lines" comment on what really happened, but the press
was either to stupid or too Duke-biased to notice it. In the press, it
was nothing but "poor baby Laettner, he has head boo-boo from mean
black man".

3. B Davis was the biggest cheap-shot artist ever. Groin grabbing,
kicking, etc. A very dirty player. He and Laettner played off each
other a lot in this regard.

4. Nothing horrible about Hurley other than he was a whining cry-baby
to the refs at the time (his FR, SO years).

Looking back on these stories, I guess none of them are really
surprising since they've more or less been proven over the years. But
at the time, no one was saying these things and everyone in the media
was kissing Dukes butt. So yes, combined with Laettner's last second
shot against UConn, I did hate Duke back then. But UConn has more than
made up for it recently.
