MIAMI -- There have been "twin towers" in the NBA before.
David Robinson and Tim Duncan had the label in San Antonio. Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon teamed up in Houston.
Now, according to Shaquille O'Neal, the "real twin towers" will be on display tonight when the Heat plays at Houston. At some point, O'Neal will appear in the lineup with Alonzo Mourning for the first time this season.
"The real twin towers," O'Neal said. "Not one real tower and one b------- tower with a messed-up view. These two twin towers are facing the ocean."
Mourning will receive more playing time with injuries to forwards Christian Laettner and Udonis Haslem. Laettner is expected to go on the injured list today with plantar fasciitis of his right foot, and Haslem is a gametime decision because of a slightly separated shoulder. Mourning, who has played center his entire career, is likely to see time at power forward alongside O'Neal.
"That would be fantastic," Mourning said. "Shaq and I have been talking about that. One thing he mentioned to me, he said, `Man, we're going to make history.' I thought about it and I said, `You know, that is a historical moment with both of us on the court.'"
"Me and him always laugh and joke that this reminds us of our battles from Orlando and Charlotte, Orlando-Miami, Lakes-Miami," O'Neal said. "We had some good battles ... He makes me work hard in practice, I make him work hard in practice. It's definitely fun having him around."
Mourning and O'Neal will most likely be in the lineup when Houston goes to its big frontcourt of 7-foot-5 center Yao Ming and 7-2 Dikembe Mutombo. The Rockets used the combination on occasion in Sunday night's loss to Minnesota. All four players have combined for 30 All-Star game appearances.
"It's going to be interesting," said Mourning, who played with Mutombo at Georgetown. "With all four of us in the paint, there's not too much room down there for anybody else."
"I'm a 13-year vet, I've been through a lot," Mourning said. "Never in my life have I had to sit on the bench that long. On any level. High school. JV. AAU, whatever. So it wasn't a matter of swallowing my pride and dealing with it. It was a matter of supporting your teammates and knowing that there's a bigger picture that you're playing for.

Not to be obvious, but you know what happened to the twin towers right?
I don't see why Mourning and Shaq are any better than Duncan and Robinson. In fact, given their ages and health I think Duncan and Robinson were better. If you want to examine the players at the peak of their careers then I think Duncan and Robinson were still better.

I rarely see Shaq and Mourning in the game at the same time, Duncan and Robinson were there at the same time. Shaq still has problems with facts, not to mention math and history.

Morning, at his prime, was not in DRob's league. Shaq, in his prime, was better offensively than Duncan. Basically you have three hall of famers, and Mourning.
Older Shaq and broken down Mourning aren't even close to Robinson/Duncan or Sampson/Olujuwon.

Interesting that this post is more than 11 hours old, and there hasn't been one "coattails" comment yet. People were accusing Malone last season for trying to ride Shaq and Kobe's coattails to a championship, but as it turned out, the team wasn't able to win a championship without him.

Main difference-Miami was not a proven championship team before Mourning came on-the Lakers ahd already won multiple chamiponships with roughly the same roster before Malone and Payton.

well i wont dare speak for everyone here, but personally i didnt think the heat were serious contenders until their last few personel moves. now IMO they're about the scariest team in the east. (not necessarily the favorites to win, but the team i wouldnt want to meet in the playoffs).

Where were you? Everyone was dancing and singing that Shaq is going to bring a championship to Miami, once the trade was done, and they started referring to the Heat as a championship contender after just 2 or 3 games through the season.
When Mourning joined them, it was riding the bus with a team that is a championship contender.
While Shaq was busy proving his point, the Houston Rockets quietly went out and won the game. There's really no debate that Shaq and Zo are far superior players than Yao and Mutombo, but on this night, they weren't so far apart.
Shaq + Zo = 25 pts, 20 reb Yao + Mutombo = 20 pts, 24 reb

Yet the season before Malone joined, the Lakers finished #5 in the West and lost in the second round of the playoffs, which is as far as the Heat went last season.

Yea, from my take on the game i think that Stan Van Gundy got outcoached by his brother Jeff last night. Instead of playing Shaq and Zo together and giving Zo some quality time to tune up his game with Shaq, Stan matched Shaq with Doleac who was outplayed by Clarence Weatherspoon. He even kept Doleac in during important minutes in the 4th quarter when the Heats lead(and momentum) whittled away. Meanwhile Jeff Van Gundy played Yao and Mutumbo together when it counted and was able to gain momentum with Mutombo's defense and rebounds while Zo (who showed signs of containing Mutumbo in the 1st half) sat on the bench. Miami needs to get Shaq and Zo together cause Zo is a great defensive threat with a canny ability to block shots. With the little time that Zo has played he has proven to be much more effective than Doleac. Doleac is not a threat and allows players to collapse on Shaq too much. Hopefully Stan Van Gundy will turn up the heat in preparation for the playoffs. I just cant seem to figure out what he is waiting for.

Exactly how does that make them a proven championship team? I guess they changed the rules and have now allowed the media to hand out championships? Or do you have a different definition of the word 'proven' than the one I am using?

How could Shaw forget about the Heat's third Tower....Wang Zhi-Zhi? Wang could be the "small forward".

Mourning, in his prime, was "better" than Shaq, FWIW. All-NBA 1st team at center, only center to have displaced Shaq on the last in the last nine years .
