MVP tough pick

MIAMI · With a month left in the regular season, debate over which player
deserves to be the NBA's MVP is about to begin.

Shaquille O'Neal, the 2000 winner, has helped the Heat to the NBA's best
record (51-16), leads the NBA in field-goal percentage (.594) and is second
in blocks (153) and sixth in rebounds (10.3 a game).

Other front-runners include Phoenix's Steve Nash, San Antonio's Tim Duncan
and Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki. Others who deserve consideration are Phoenix's
Amare Stoudemire, Cleveland's LeBron James, Seattle's Ray Allen and
Minnesota's Kevin Garnett.

And there's the Heat's Dwyane Wade, who is eighth in scoring (23.8) and
sixth in assists (7.0) entering tonight's home game against the New York
Knicks.

Coach Stan Van Gundy wonders whether the Heat having two qualified MVP
candidates will offset each other's chances of capturing the award.

"Those guys are both as valuable as any player in the league, but to be
quite honest, I think the thing that will hurt both of them is that they
will tend to split a lot of votes," Van Gundy said. "People will look at the
Miami Heat and say, `Wow, those guys deserve a lot of credit,' and some will
vote for Shaq and some will vote for Dwyane.

"Probably that's the way it should be, but they're both very deserving MVP
candidates."

The same could be said for Nash and Stoudemire in Phoenix. While Nash is
first in assists (11.4) and eighth in 3-point percentage (.424), Stoudemire
is fourth in scoring (26.1) and second in field-goal percentage (.565).

Van Gundy said he believes the MVP should come from one of the elite teams.

"You have to have a real feeling that these are guys who really elevate
their team," Van Gundy said. "It's Most Valuable Player -- somebody who can
really take a team far beyond the level that they would be at without them.
Both of our guys would fit into that category."

I'm with Charles Barkley on this one. O'Neal has exposed Dr. Buss's
foolishness...

KG has the stats, and means everyhing to the Timberwolves. But it's
been a tough season, including battling tendinitis in his knee.

Local Twin Cities reporter Britt Robson wrote:

And over the 1st eight games in March, the trend continued. The

the Wolves were +28.

Sadly, Garnett doesn't get my vote this year.

I kind of agree that perhaps Buss had no choice but to trade away Shaq
to placate Kobe.

But then a trade that's primarily Shaq for Odom? That's mind
boggling.

A lot of this is likely due to him just not playing that hard at the
defensive end this year after the first month or so. Whether it is the
team turmoil or nagging health stuff that is causing it, you would know
better than I.

Probably his reputation for poor defense, rebounding and lollygagging
out at the three-pt. line from years past is keeping him "down". If
he improves again next year, he might be a serious contender, as may
be the Mavs. IMHO, adding Van Horn and Dampier have given them a
much needed toughness. Just add a little seasoning at point guard.
Avery Johnson's the man to make it happen.

Well, it's nice that I'm not the only one who's noticed his defensive
improvement this season.

"Van Horn" and "toughness" make for an interesting sentence.

yeah, it's funny the perception of him as still being another "soft euro"
when the guy clearly brings it on the boards and drives into the paint with
regularity (check his FTAs). the whole team has a soft rep which it just
doesn't deserve this year. they're a much tougher defensive team this
season and dirk is no longer a perimeter player with no D.

I almost posted on the same theme. Only in Dallas I guess. KVH is funny
though. He's only a wuss on offense.

That would indicate that Nash is ranked somewhere in the 56-60 range on
defense.

Just thought you might want to rethink that.

Well, the Lakers used to have a PG that made bucketloads of assists, ran the
floor and scored when he had to. If I remember correctly, he was not known
for his steller defense. ;-)
