scoring question - desperation shots

Tim923 18 March 2005 12:09:30
Does a missed half-court buzzer shot count as a missed shot in the
stats? I always thought it did, but someone told me they don't in
college.

According to NCAA Statistician's Manual, they do not ... a very short
clock, abnormally long range, or an abnormal shooting motion are each
criteria a scorer can use to write off shot without chalking it up as
a FGA. Do not have NBA manual at hand but believe it is substantially
the same.

A big center could be stuck taking a 30 foot shot after a steal.
Perhaps not a desperation shot for Reggie, but for Shaq yes. Are they
allowed to discriminate based on talent?

No -- clock time, distance, and abnormal form are all listed as
criteria to differentiate "desperation" heaves from FGAs.

So where do they draw the line? 30,40,50,60 feet?

What if a team is up by 20 points and someone's just trying to get a
free 3 from half-court?
