Miss St

Jeremy Chapman 3 March 2005 17:07:07
Mississippi State looked sloppy last night at Arkansas but managed the 57-55
win. With 9 SEC wins and 21 wins overall, I think the Bulldogs can breathe
a sigh of relief, as I think they've secured an at-large bid. They did have
a woeful OOC schedule, though, and they lost to the only strong non-conf
teams they played (Syracuse & Arizona). Their recent slide coincided with
the loss of a key player (Winsome Frazier), and I keep hearing that the NCAA
takes injuries into account and cuts teams in that situation some slack
(mostly I hear this in regards to Ga Tech and BJ Elder as a reason the
Jackets should make it if they end up 8-8 in the ACC), so perhaps this will
apply to Miss St as well. I think they're in, but a win over Bama this
weekend and/or an SEC Tourney win (looks like a first round game against
UGA) should make them a lock.

FWIW, espn.com's "Bubble Watch" has them as a lock in the SEC, along with
UK, AL, UF, and LSU. Vanderbilt's the only bubble team they identify.
