Duke-Kentucky buzzer play

Tim923 25 February 2005 06:01:44
Maybe someone that's seen a lot of college basketball games knows.

How often does the team needing a FG to tie or win with (2 seconds
left) score after a time-out and the ball on the other end. Have
there been similar plays.

This play is probably more succesful in the NBA in which a full
time-out moves the ball to half-court.

I saw a game involving two little known schools with the score tied
with 2 seconds.
Same as Duke-Kentucky except starting from a tie rather than one point
down.

They inbounded a pass to the top of the key. The offensive player
caught it spinning in
the air and put up what I think was a three pointer that went in. His
feet did not even touch
the ground. It was a more spectacular play then Christian Laetner,
although it wasn't
a big game.

No need to go back that far, it's happened this year:

For this former quarterback, it took a Hail Mary thrown like a
baseball to win the basketball game.

With 0.6 seconds left in overtime, Jordan Snipes of Guilford College
rebounded the other team's missed free throw, wheeled around and
heaved the ball the full length of the court.

Swish.

Wow. Does one have to be quite strong to make a 90 foot shot? I
think the farthest shot I've made (or made rim contact) was near
half-court while running to get momentum.

I took a few 3/4 shots, but the ball never came close to having the
distance.

Yeah, you do have to be "quite strong." The kid in question did also
happen to be a quarterback, so I'm guessing that helped a lot.

I remember the NCAA semi-final game in '57 UNC vs Michigan St. At the >end of regulation, one of the Carolina players took a shot which missed >and a MSU player took the rebound, turned around and threw it the length >of the court for a basket, but the refs ruled that it occurred after the buzzer.

That's real close, but a slight correction -- Jumpin Johnny Green got
the rebound and tossed it up-court to Jack Quigley who canned a
50-footer, albeit after the horn.

You're right, if you're talking a jumper-type shot (normal form) ...
the Guilford shot was a one-armerk, a throw. Not hard to throw an
arcing ball 90+ feet ... throwing a frozen rope that far, however is
another issue.

Who was the kids from U-Conn -- Burrell, was it? -- who threw a length
of courter to get a baseline J to beat ?Clemson in early 90's NCAA's ?

And, of course, there was the perfect play in which Bryce Drew & Valpo
beat Mississippi in a more recent NCAA -- the in-bound past mid-court
was a perfect throw to one of the Jenkins kids (they had two) who
caught & immediately re-directed to Drew coming down the sideline --
he pulled up and his one at the gun to win it. Great play, one of my
favorites.
