So, it begins Tim Burnett 23:05:48
The annual SEC NCAA tourney suckfest begins. Alabama leads the way. As a
fan of Kentucky, it drives me crazy that the SEC teams can play so hard, and
well, against UK, then seem to not really care when the NCAA rolls around...

MI5 Persecution: BHS Croydon 18/12/98 (2677) Guest 06:48:27

Evil old bat in BHS 18/12/98

Certainty level: 40%

Not quite sure how sure I am about this one. I went down to Croydon (Surrey)
with my mother to buy her a beret. After doing the shopping, we went to
the BHS store restaurant to lunch on fish and chips.

You can guess the rest. Auditory hallucinations my shrink calls them,
faithfully recorded on Sony minidisc. Some old cow going on about
"see that chap, the one over there, something's wrong with him".

It is quite tiring being attacked by random idiots in the street, or as
in this case, by some random, evil old bat in a restaurant. Fortunately
it is only a sporadic occurrence. My enemies seem of late reluctant to
waste resources in my direction. Should I take this as an insult? Am I not
worth the millions of taxpayers money which has been wasted on me? Are the
obsessives of MI5 themselves the "nutters" and "really mad" which they
accuse me of being? Interestingly this suggestion as to the psychological
profiles of Security Service personnel has been made by others... it does
lead one to wonder, doesn't it?

Shinn vows successful return to New Orleans

Owner George Shinn and the Hornets returned to New Orleans, but will
the team stay there? by NATE BILLINGS, THE OKLAHOMAN

More than two years after Hurricane Katrina wreaked deadly floodwaters
on New Orleans, debris-filled houses still litter entire
neighborhoods. Many homes in the city's worst-hit areas retain their
distinct door-knob-high water lines and neon-orange paint signaling
searches for the living.

While many residents have returned to New Orleans, the city's
pre-Katrina life has yet to be restored. Ready or not, this is where
New Orleans Hornets owner George Shinn soon will learn whether his NBA
franchise can stay afloat as his team opens this NBA season Wednesday.

"I really honestly believe that we're going to make a lot of people
eat crow for saying it won't work, Shinn said. "We're committed to
making this work. I might be apologizing later, saying I was wrong.
And if I'm wrong, I'll tell you I'm wrong. But I don't think I'm
wrong. I think we can get it done.

Defying doubters is nothing new for Shinn.

Skeptics questioned whether Charlotte was a viable pro market when
Shinn's expansion Hornets were born in 1988. They led the NBA in
attendance in eight of their first nine seasons. When Katrina forced
them to Oklahoma City, the Hornets averaged 18,329 per home game
during two seasons that propelled the city atop the NBA's list of
relocation or expansion sites.

But this could be Shinn's biggest challenge.

Louisiana is a football-crazed state, and New Orleans was a borderline
NBA market before Katrina. The team ranked last and second-to-last in
attendance in the two seasons before the hurricane.

Causing more concern, the city lost an estimated 300,000 residents in
Katrina's aftermath, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, dropping its
metropolitan-area population to about 1 million and making it the
nation's smallest market to host two major league franchises.

"One reason I would take a lot of pride in this is because a lot of
people here are hurting and suffering, Shinn said. "There are a lot
of people here who were born and raised in this community and this
area that were devastated by the storm. They just need to be uplifted
and they need some help. They need leadership, and I feel like I'm in
a position to do that and I'm going to do it.

How he'll succeed is what's lost on most outside observers who are
peering into a city with a shortage of major corporate dollars and has
financially-strained residents with much more pressing needs than
sporting events.

The Hornets have sold slightly more than 6,000 full-season ticket
equivalents, about half the total in each of the team's two seasons in
Oklahoma City. With the help of the NBA last spring, the team landed
national sponsorship deals with Capital One and soft drink company
Cadbury Schweppes. But that momentum has slowed, and Hornets Chief
Operating Officer Hugh Weber called the corporate sponsorships a "work
in progress.

"Nobody thought that we'd come back here and just turn the light
switch on and people would sign up, Weber said. "We knew it was going
to take a great strategy and a great plan to reengage and reintroduce
ourselves to this market, both from a sponsorship level and from a
ticketing level.

The Hornets have introduced "A ticket plan for every fan to spur
season ticket sales. The team created ticket packages that include 10,
15, 21 and 41 games, with various options for weekend only plans or
midweek games against teams that feature the league's biggest stars.

Shinn, meanwhile, is following the same blueprint that made his teams
a hit in Oklahoma and North Carolina grassroots efforts that rely on
word of mouth promotion, frequent speaking engagements, participating
in charitable community events and being available to almost any media
outlet.

He calls it preaching the gospel of the Hornets.

"The tougher the challenge, the better and more diligently he steps up
to it, said Marilynn Bowler, who served as vice president of public
affairs for the Charlotte Hornets throughout the team's days in North
Carolina. "He loves a tough fight. Something bubbles up from within
George, and he reaches down inside himself and comes up with whatever
it takes.

Much of that is fueled by his core belief in his product and people,
she said. "His belief in people is what's going to make the team
successful in New Orleans.

But Shinn knows his efforts depend on winning.

"We have to control what we can control, and that's just the wins and
the losses, said point guard Chris Paul. "That's all we can control
as players, and that's what we're going to do.
