| On to Athens! Your Name Here 22:16:12 |
| | Yeller Jackets will travel to Athens, GA to play Louisville at Foley Field. We have played well there the only time we visited (11-1 thrashing of the Bullfrogs), so things are looking up.
Still feel like we were rooked out of a hosting spot, but facing a "real" national seed- not the "joke" #8 seed Bullfrogs -would have been rougher sledding.
We'll see how it all shakes out Friday. We are peaking at a good time hitting-wise, but our pitchers will have to step up. Still a very winnable regional.
I know Boyd will be proud of the seedings in our regional_super- they follow the precious "ISR" ratings perfectly.
ISR RPI (1) *North Carolina St. (38-20) 42 12 (4) James Madison (38-17) 81 60 (3) Charlotte (43-14) 72 50 (2) South Carolina (38-21) 43 19
(1) *Georgia (35-21-1) #8 National Seed 31 17 (4) Lipscomb (32-28) 146 151
(3) Louisville (41-19) 74 51 (2) Georgia Tech (39-19) 33 7

| Annual bracket whine Tony Lima 21:50:49 |
| | Give me a break. Arizona State the #3 national seed? Did the committee bother to look at their opponents? Guess "strength of schedule" hasn't filtered into baseball yet.
At least Fullerton at #5 beat some decent teams.
And which unranked team took five out of six from those two teams? Well, at least we're hosting a regional. - Tony

| RC/25 Introduction (5/24) Nelson Lu 19:41:16 |
| | The following posts list major league teams' regular position players' RC/25 by position. Here are a bit of definitions:
RC/25:
A stat created by Bill James to measure how many runs a lineup of 9 of the same individual would score in a game. (The "real" version is RC/27, since there are 27 outs in a game; however, since certain stats are not readily available to us during the season, James has an abbreviated version known as RC/25 to adjust for the absence of those stats. For the formula to RC/27, please e-mail me. It is also available in Total Baseball and many other reference manuals.)
A = H + BB - CS B = 1.125 * 1B + 1.69 * 2B + 3.02 * 3B + 3.73 * HR + .29 * BB + .492 * SB - .04 * SO (Formerly B = TB + .64 * SB + .24 * BB - .03 * K) C = AB + BB
RC = ((A + (2.4 * C)) * (B + (3 * C)) / (9 * C)) - (.9 * C) O = AB - H + CS RC/25 = RC / O * 25
(The reason why HBP, among other stats, is not included is not because I think that they're not important; it's that the data sources I use do not include them with the "primary stats," and therefore, adding HBP and other stats would effectively require twice the work, and the gain, while considerable, was judged by me to be not worth it in interim reports.)
There are three additional Bill James adjustments that I do not use:
1. He adjusts for BA with runners on base. Originally, the adjustment was not published; but it has been, in the most recent STATS Major League Handbook and other sources. I am, however, not incorporating this change since I have found this change to be arbitrary and also increasing team-dependence.
2. He also adds additional points for a non-bases empty HR. Again, this is highly arbitrary -- why not add points for a non-bases loaded 1B, 2B, or 3B? Further, this increases team-dependence as well, which reduces the usefulness of RC.
3. He then adds up all players' RC on a team and adjusts it in a factor that is based on whether the team scored more than it is expected or less. I find that this defeats the point of RC, so I do not use this adjustment.
PRC/25:
Park-adjusted RC/25. Park adjustment is a topic that I don't know how to explain well in a paragraph, so I will not attempt to try. However, many works that explain it are available on the net, and any search engine should yield a number of useful articles. For these numbers, only this year's park factors are used.
Value:
An estimate of how many runs a player is above the ever so elusive "replacement level" (that is, a level of performance at which a player can easily be found at little or no cost to a team). For these posts, replacement level is estimated at 50 points of OBP and 50 points of SLG below the average for each position.
Notes:
1. For these posts, the players who were traded during the middle of the season have their park factors prorated by AB + BB with the teams. (This is not mathematically correct, but is the best I can do for now.) 2. Please send to me corrections if I misplaced someone's position.
"SABREmetrics isn't about statistics, it is about the search for new evidence." - Bill James (thanks, Bill Reich) =============================================================================== GO (LOS ANGELES) ANGELS OF ANAHEIM! =============================================================================== Nelson Lu (nlu@cs.stanford.edu)

| | Yeller Jackets overcome a 7-3 deficit and roll past NC State (and their pitching ace Surkamp) to take the opener at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Haniger's amazing tag saved a run (and nearly started a brawl) as NC State basically booted away the lead and the game.
We'll take the "W". Next is the 600 pound gorilla U of Miami who trashed Clemson 7-1. Looks like a great tournament...stay tuned.
From www.ramblinwreck.com: Georgia Tech Wins 10-9 Thriller Over NC State In ACC Tournament Opener
Yellow Jackets score five in the eighth and two in the ninth for win over Wolfpack
May 21, 2008
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Tech scored eight runs over the last three innings, including two runs without the benefit of a base hit in the top of the ninth, for a wild and entertaining 10-9 win over NC State in the opening game of the 2008 ACC Baseball Tournament at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The 3-hour, 50-minute game - the first of four tournament games here Thursday - saw the two teams combine for 28 base hits, 26 strikeouts, 19 runs, eight errors, three wild pitches, two hit batsmen and four lead changes.
Trailing 9-8 in the top of the ninth inning, Georgia Tech scored a pair of runs when three different NC State infielders committed errors on consecutive plays. Chase Burnette and Patrick Long scored the tying and go-ahead runs, respectively, on State's third straight miscue, this one on a ground ball by Jason Haniger.
Yellow Jacket reliever Brad Rulon sealed the win in the bottom of the ninth inning - but not without suspense. After retiring the first two batters, Rulon nailed Matt Payne with a pitch and walked Jeremy Synan to put the Wolfpack in scoring position with two outs. Rulon, however, got Pat Ferguson to ground out for the game's final out.
"It was a wild game and an excellent comeback from my team," Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall said. "I didn't know if we were ever going to get them out after we took the lead. I thought that Brad Rulon made a great pitch on Pat Ferguson, who we had a hard time with all day, to get that last out.

From www.ramblinwreck.com: Virginia Takes Series Opener from Jackets in Charlottesville, 4-2
Luke Murton doubled and scored both runs in the loss
May 15, 2008
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Matt Packer held Georgia Tech to one run through seven innings and the Virginia pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts en route to a 4-2 win over the Yellow Jackets Thursday night at Davenport Field.
Georgia Tech (36-17, 14-14 ACC) was limited to just six hits on the night, with Packer (6-2) giving up five while striking out seven to pick up his sixth win of the season. Andrew Carraway worked a scoreless eighth inning before the Yellow Jackets scratched for a run in the ninth off closer Michael Schwimer.
Virginia (36-17, 15-13 ACC) collected nine hits, four of which were bunt singles, and had runners on base in every inning in the series opener. The Cavaliers stranded 15 runners on base on the night, including four innings with the bases loaded.
Packer retired the first eight batters he faced in order before the Yellow Jackets scratched for a run in the top of the fourth when Luke Murton doubled and scored on an RBI single by Derek Dietrich. Murton and Dietrich finished with two hits apiece on the night.
A single to centerfield by Phil Gosselin followed by bunt singles by Franco Faldes and John Barr loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth before a sacrifice fly by Tyler Cannon tied the game at 1-1. After Greg Miclat notched the Cavs' third bunt single of the inning, Yellow Jacket starter David Duncan retired Patrick Wingfield with a strikeout and forced David Adams to ground out to get out of the jam.

ATLANTA - Nick Montgomery and three relievers combined to scatter five hits, while Ryan Peisel homered to lift Georgia past Georgia Tech, 3-2, in the regular-season series finale between the two rivals Tuesday night at Turner Field.
The sixth Spring Baseball Classic for Kids, pitting the two teams in one of their regular season meetings, drew 22,599 fans, the second highest attendance in the history of the event.
The win helped Georgia (34-17-1) avoid a regular-season sweep at the hands of Tech (36-16). The Jackets had defeated the Bulldogs 9-4 in Atlanta on April 9 and 11-1 in Athens last Wednesday.
Deck McGuire (8-1), a freshman bidding to earn his third win this season against Georgia, instead suffered his first loss of the season. He struggled early but managed to last six innings, scattering 10 hits and while allowing three runs. He walked three and fanned six, six days after a 9-strikeout, 0-walk performance in his win in Athens, and left the game trailing 3-2.
His counterpart, Montgomery (2-1), allowed just two hits, a walk and a run through five innings. The senior from Marietta, Ga., struck out three and left with his team ahead 3-1. He had excellent help from the Bulldogs' bullpen, which scattered four hits and allowed just one unearned run over the final four frames.

Clemson Avoids Sweep with 16-6 Win Over No. 25 Tech Baseball
Jackets win the series, 2-1
May 11, 2008
ATLANTA - Jeff Schaus collected a career-high five hits and Trey Delk held Georgia Tech to two runs on three hits through 5.2 innings as Clemson (26-25-1, 11-18-1 ACC) escaped Atlanta with a 16-6 win over the Yellow Jackets (36-15, 14-13 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Jackets held the Tigers to just two runs on 14 hits through the first two games of the series, but Clemson scored 16 times on 20 hits in the series finale to avoid their second-straight series sweep after Florida State won all three against them a week ago in Clemson.
Schaus went 5-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored to pace the Clemson offense on the day. The Yellow Jackets managed 12 hits of their own, including three by Charlie Blackmon and two from Brad Feltes, but couldn't overcome the 10-1 lead the Tigers mounted through the first five-and-a-half innings.
Feltes narrowed the Tigers' lead to two runs in the bottom of the second inning when he sent his 14th home run of the season over the center field wall, but the Tigers answered with seven runs over the next three innings to push their lead to nine runs.

| RC/25 Introduction (5/10) Nelson Lu 21:50:57 |
| | The following posts list major league teams' regular position players' RC/25 by position. Here are a bit of definitions:
RC/25:
A stat created by Bill James to measure how many runs a lineup of 9 of the same individual would score in a game. (The "real" version is RC/27, since there are 27 outs in a game; however, since certain stats are not readily available to us during the season, James has an abbreviated version known as RC/25 to adjust for the absence of those stats. For the formula to RC/27, please e-mail me. It is also available in Total Baseball and many other reference manuals.)
A = H + BB - CS B = 1.125 * 1B + 1.69 * 2B + 3.02 * 3B + 3.73 * HR + .29 * BB + .492 * SB - .04 * SO (Formerly B = TB + .64 * SB + .24 * BB - .03 * K) C = AB + BB
RC = ((A + (2.4 * C)) * (B + (3 * C)) / (9 * C)) - (.9 * C) O = AB - H + CS RC/25 = RC / O * 25

Happy story from www.ramblinwreck.com: McGuire Tosses Gem as No. 25 Tech Baseball Stops No. 8 Georgia, 11-1
The freshman worked seven strong innings as Tech defeated Georgia for the second time this season
May 7, 2008
ATHENS, Ga. - Deck McGuire, one of six freshmen to start against No. 8 Georgia Wednesday night, pitched a gem to lead No. 25 Georgia Tech (34-14) to an 11-1 victory over the Bulldogs (31-16-1) at Foley Field. The win was the Yellow Jackets' second this season against Georgia, as Tech improved to 11-0 against teams from the Peach State in 2008.
McGuire (8-0) iced the Bulldog's bats through seven innings, holding Georgia to just one run on four hits while striking out a career-high nine batters to pick up his team-leading eighth win of the season. Andrew Robinson retired the side in the eighth inning on just six pitches before Taylor Wood closed out the game by tossing the ninth.
Juniors Charlie Blackmon and Luke Murton paced the Yellow Jackets with three hits apiece. Both players went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored against the Bulldogs. Blackmon, Murton and Brad Feltes all hit home runs to extend Tech's streak to 16-straight games with a homer. It was the 21st time this season the Yellow Jackets have hit more than one home run in a game.
Each of Tech's last nine runs were scored with two outs, including both run-scoring hits by Feltes, who went 2-for-5 with four RBI in the game.
