What counts as "putting the ball in play"? What about a foul ball? What> about a walk?>

There was a rumor that Torre and Giambi had a talk about sending Giambi to
the minor leagues for a while. When asked about this, Torre claims that it
was briefly mentioned in one of conversations with Jason but that it was not
really seriously considered.

Can you imagine Giambi, with all the millions he's making, playing in the
minors? What a joke. The NY fans are just circling around this guy waiting
to devour him. He is constantly being booed in games at the Bronx I hear.

A walk doesn't put the ball in play. And a foul ball isn't either, even
if it's caught, I think.

Cashman, Torre, and Giambi definitely did meet. And they admitted they
talked about it. I don't know, it's pretty incredible. But I don't think
Giambi would agree to be sent down (he'd have to), nor would the Yankees
be excited about it, since they're already paying this guy so much, as you
say...

Yeah, that's true. They greeted him with cheers the first week, but after
awhile, his performance didn't justify it...

Putting the ball in play: any at-bat that does not result in a strikeout.

Oh yeah, they're pretty frustrated with him. Why not be? What with a
contract like he has :) It's all the Yankees' fault anyway, I suppose...

You don't put balls into play when you walk, either.

BB: 18> SO: 29> HBP: 6> IBB: 1
TPA: 101

IBB are included in BB, I think.

18+29+6 / 101 = 52.5%

Since when are walks counted in the AB stat?

Were you here at the start of the thread?

Quoting:

Peter Gammons listed some painful Giambi stats:

- Thus far this season, you have failed to put the ball in play in 52.5
percent of your plate appearances; no player has ever failed to put the
ball in play in 50 percent of his plate appearances over a full season.

 77 - 29 = 48

48/101 = .4752 4752 4752... or 47.52%

He has no sacrifices, which I forgot to include. But it turns out that
Giambi has no sacrifices, so it still works out.
