Pitchers who throw a complete game shutout and also homer...

Mike Hampton homered today while throwing a 9 inning shutout, how many times has this happened ? The most famous case I can think of would be Rick Wise throwing nohitter in early '70s and homering TWICE in that game

So the announcers got to use the oh-so-witty "helping his own cause!" call at least twice in that game, eh?

Actually, they said, "WHAT ELSE CAN HE DO? ... HE CAN DO IT ALL, FOLKS!" Because, since his home run made it 14-0, it wasn't like he was helping the cause so much as just padding his offensive numbers and salting the Astros' wounds.

Well good. The ESPN and FSN idots both used "helping his own cause!".

Another instance was Jason Jennings, who is the only pitcher to throw a shutout and hit a HR in his major league debut.

Earl Wilson did it at least once, in '66. Not too surprising as he had 13 career shutouts and 35 HRs.

did Dontrelle do it last year, I know he went 6 for 6 and including a homer in his first few at bats, and I believe he opened 3-0 with an 0.00 ERA so maybe he did it, I'll have to check

The Rockies' Jason Jennings homered and threw a shutout *in his major-league debut*. IIRC, he's the only pitcher ever to do that.

Jennings is an unusual player. I've wondered if he should switch to a "hitters position" Or maybe he should just find a way out of Colorado.

Nah, just use him as an extra late-innings pinch-hitter when you don't want to use the backup catcher yet. Mike Hampton and Brooks Kieschnick could be good at that too.

Didn't Glavine pinch-hit in extra innings for the Mets last season?

Actually at one point or another the Rockies have used all three of those guys as pinch-hitters, although Kieschnick didn't pitch when he was here. Hampton pinch-hit quite a bit, but usually as the first guy off the bench -- say, in the 5th inning -- not the last. Perry>
