How to Handle Catcher's Days Off ?

Magnusfarce 18 April 2005 05:12:05
I'm fairly new to fantasy baseball, playing in a 5x5 roto league. Here in
year two, I find that I'm asking myself the same question again: how do
most players deal with the fact that catchers have so many days off? Most
catchers will only play maybe 80 percent of the games the other position
players do, and this creates a shortage in the cumulative stats like HR's,
RBI's, etc.

One solution is to carry a second catcher and substitute him in on days when
the main catcher is off, but I don't know how to predict this. As far as I
know, this sort of info isn't published like rotation starts, and I probably
don't want to spend that kind of time anyway. To make it tougher, my league
has 20 player rosters, so carrying an extra catcher is kinda tough.

Do most people just let their main catcher roll through the season and
accept that they will have lots of catcher innings left over at the end?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You could carry a second catcher and let him fill in. Catchers usually> don't catch day games after night games, or both games of a> double-header. Unless I know that my catcher is not playing *for sure*, as in a day off or
injury, I stand pat. Even with day off, though, most leagues have a 162
game limit, so you can't use one everyday, but filling in for day's off,
you'll get there better than most that don't. Find a good matchup on day's
off and use it to your advantage, if there are any, maybe against a pitcher
that gives up a lot of HR's.

Pick up Inge of the Tigers. he is eligble as a catcher in most leagues
and he is a starting 3b for Detroit. Therefore you have a catcher that
plays 150 games.
