you guys are still banging on this empty drum? I told you long ago
what was real. Or maybe you didn't see the NCAA National Championship
final last year. Oh, by the way, I decided to go through the fake ACC
conferenece for myself recently to see what was what. I found what I
always knew was true. BOGUS. Great talent. Mediocre coaching. Gee,
no wonder no championships come from there. Your paper bravado has
been verified.

Hi, Bill, nice to see you among the living. Might want to be careful with
the revisionist version about the NCSU stint, there, although I'd honestly
love to hear your side of it -- hit me in email if you don't want to air
dirty laundry.

Anyway, any comments on
http://www.boydsworld.com/breadcrumbs/winning_bet.html, or would you just
rather let that rest?

OK, if all the ACC needed was good coaching, then how come NCSU didn't
suddenly get a lot better after you joined their staff? Are you a
lousy coach?

I think the ACC has been down the last two years, in comparison to the
years before that. I'm sure the addition of Miami will help some,
however. GT has been doing much better this year so far than I
expected, but I don't feel I've been banging the drum, saying they are
the greatest. You are reading something into my posting that isn't
there.

Let me field this one.

Any coach that can take a team from Division II to Division I and - in his
first year - take that team of scruffs (who played on the worst field and
had the worst facilities in the country) to within one out of the College
World Series, must be a pretty good coach.

Don't know about the assistant coaching thing.

I guess you weren't paying attention as usual. Within one year NC State
was in the Super Regional in Miami after being a nobody. Main
reason--pitching. Not the least of which was Vern Sterry who I recruited
from California and he became a 1st team All-American with an 11-0 record.
Since I've left, they went back to oblivion. As Vern and Michael Rogers
the reason it happened.

Boyd, hello. You want the real story of that whole thing? I'd be happy to
oblige if you guys really want to know. It's interesting you'd ask since
I guess that means there is some story out there I don't know about. I
left that mess behind me 2 years ago and never really knew about any
reactions. But, for you guys, I would tell the story if you're really
interested.

Actually, the one thing I remember is that I took a trip out to see N.C.
State play at North Carolina-Greensboro (one of my favorite small stadiums
in the country) in 2002, and two Wolf Pack pitchers combined to throw a
no-hitter on that rainy evening.

If it matters any, Coach Kernan was wearing a "NYFD" hat that night and was
gracious enough to talk with me for a few minutes after the game.

Still wish he was at Northridge though.

You completely missed the point. My jab at Kernen wasn't meant to
imply he's a bad coach. Instead, I think he's actually an opinionated
jerk who is consistently lacking in objectivity. His contempt for the
ACC and east-coast baseball is no secret. When we had our "discussion"
of this topic a few years ago, I carefully showed how the ACC had
gained ground over the years on advancing in the CWS. He kept
repeating that they had never won a title (although they came close
several times) and blamed slight declines in the performance of west
coast teams on them always having to play each other in regionals
(which is pretty much not really a new thing).

I will admit that his timing is improved, however. Last year, the ACC
had a down year, and everything I've seen so far this year makes me
think this year will be about the same. I'm hoping that this is simply
a temporary reversal and not the beginning of a new trend. Only time
will tell. In any event, ACC coaches have had their share of success,
even if they haven't gotten any titles yet to show for it.

I noticed. GT made a super-regional too, and I don't see you singing
their praises. In fact, in previous discussions you've given little
credence to on-field performance prior to the CWS.
