Waves beat Wave

Sorenson 27 February 2005 04:49:17
Pepperdine beat No. 1 ranked Tulane, 5-2 in Malibu today.

The Waves scored all five runs in the second inning off of Georgia Tech
turncoat Micah Owings, keyed by leadoff man Luke Salas' bases loaded/bases
clearing double to the gap.

Interestingly, Owings allowed the bases to get loaded up by a pair of bunt
singles in between he and first baseman Greg Dini. One was by fleet footed
frosh Adrian Ortiz (who was a 6th round draft pick last June).

Also, I've never seen a pitcher induce so many pop-ups in all my years of
covering baseball. The Tulane infielders didn't need to make a throw to
first off a grounder until the 6th inning. The Waves hit 14 pop fly outs
and, aside from the decisive second inning, got only one hit off Owings and
reliever Daniel Latham.

I was bummed to find that Brian Bogusevic and super-frosh Warren McFadden
didn't play for the Greenies today. According to Tulane S.I.D. Richie
Weaver, Bogusevic has a bad hammy, which won't allow him to run very well,
though he did pitch yesterday's win. I also found out that I've been
mispronouncing Bogusevic's name all this time. Glad I don't do any TV.

Pepperdine's starter Paul Coleman did a good job, holding Tulane's potent
offense to three hits as he pitched into the 8th inning.

Tulane 000 000 020- 2
Pepperdine 050 000 00x- 5

Tulane falls to 8-1
Pepperdine becomes bowl eligible at 6-5.

Hung out on the Tulane side of the stadium. They were very nice.

They asked where the riots, mudslides, earthquakes and movie stars were. I
told them they wouldn't see any of them, but if they hung out 'til Monday,
they'd probably see one of those police chases on TV.
