That's plain silly. They might be a little better but they were very very
bad last year (with a Cy Young Caliber performance from Randy Johnson - who
is gone). What reasons do you have for this pick? Right now I see them as
having the worst record in the majors and losing 95+ games.

I'll say San Diego. The young players on SD are really starting to come
together. I would have picked SF but the loss of Bonds is going to really
hurt badly. The Dodgers may be competitive.

NL Central> St. Louis

A reasonable choice. I'll say the Cubs. I think that Prior and Wood
really are not hurt and the best starting staff in baseball is going to
prove it in Spades this year. I predict three twenty+ game winners
(Zambrano (Cy Young Winner), Prior and Wood), a 16 game winner (Maddux) and
14 wins out of the number 5's)
NL East> New York
They were also very bad last year and a number of their key pieces are old
and/or ready to fall apart. Florida has gotten better and was competitive
until the end. I say the Marlins break the Braves run (And the Mets finish
below the Nationals....)
Atlanta

St. Louis
AL West> Anaheim (refuse to call them LA)

Hard to argue. My gut tells me Oakland even with all of the loses...
AL Central> Chicago

I am puzzled by this. Are you sure you are thinking of the right team? The
White Sox are significantly worse than last year and they are trying to
become a "speed" team in a bandbox of a park. They look to me to be ready
to fall off the abyss. I pick them to finish last in the division and with
the second worst record in baseball. (Only Toronto will end up with a worse
record...)
I can't pick against the Twins until the lose...
AL East> Boston
Okay. I think the wheels fall off the Yankee cart this year.

New York

I think the wheels fall off the Yankee cart. This is going to be the
"wierd" one... I think Detroit is actually going to put it together and
win the Wild Card..
Boston over Chicago in 7 games

Didn't they lose 111 games last season? They will be better this year, but
there's no way they'll improve that much. I'm going with LA again.
NL Central> St. Louis>
NL East> New York

Atlanta... until proven otherwise.
Atlanta

Cubs.
AL West> Anaheim (refuse to call them LA)>
AL Central> Chicago

Twins still have the pitching to win this one.
AL East> Boston>
New York

Works for me.

Beltran is no saviour- he's a .267 hitter that Boras overpriced.

Well, he was in the top 5 in the majors in VORP last year, and had a
136 OPS+ as a CF... Batting average is not offense.

And cherry picking your stats doesn't really make for a convincing
argument. Why not mention his 38 HRs, or his 42-3 SB-CS ratio?
World Series> > St. Louis over New York>
Probably St. Louis. Doesnt it seem that there is really gonna be a
Curse of> the A-Rod, tho. Yanks may choke again in the playoffs....

Maybe. But if so, their 2005 "choke" would have nothing to do with
their 2004 ALCS.

Picking the Cubs with that offense and injury prone pitching is silly.

As an A's fan, I'd love to see them pull it out. But trading away those
two guys killed them. They'll be lucky to come in third.

Picking the Cubs with that offense and injury prone pitching is silly.

The Cubs were in the playoffs two years ago and were in the playoff hunt
with 2 games left in the season last year. At least some of the "injury"
problems were due to bad luck and not "chronic" problems. The pitching
staff is all "young" with the exception of Maddux, and is still on the
uphill side of the curve. In other words, they should be getting better not
declining. As for the line up, Garciapara will be there for a full year.
He is a major upgrade over the other guys that played the position last
year. Lee is not yet moving into the decline phase. A full year of
Walker/Hairston is a major upgrade over Walker/Grudzulenik. Alou and
Sosa's production will likely be at least equalled by the platoons in the
outfield and IF Dubois plays up to his promise, the Cubs will see an
improvement. Aramis Ramirez and Corey Patterson, like the pitching staff,
should be on the uphill side of the curve. Finally the Cubs appear to have
a number of other young guys ready to take big steps up and help

Further the Cubs lost more games than they should have based their numbers.
That is unlikely to happen two years running.

In other words, it looks like a much better team than the last two years -
both offensively and defensively in a Division where one team (The Astros)
has gotten measurably worse and the other "big team" the Cardinals has, at
best, stayed in the same position.

But again, I would love to hear your support for ideas such as the pick of
the Diamondbacks in the West.

Obviously, they have some question marks in their starting rotation
now. OTOH, their lineup is likely substantially better than it was
last year (Kendall instead of Miller, a full season of Chavez, 2b not
a black hole, Crosby likely to improve with a full season under his
belt, etc) and their bullpen is likely much better too. And while
Hudson was extremely effective for them last season - Mulder wasn't.

They might be a season away, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least
if they are as good as or better than they were last year.

It's not a young team. Greene, Burroughs, and Nady are young, and they
have a fairly young rotation, but that's about it. Of course, compared
to the Giants they look young, but overall this is not a team that I'd
expect to improve by everyone getting a year older.
