| RC/25 Introduction (5/10) Nelson Lu 21:50:57 |
| | The following posts list major league teams' regular position players' RC/25 by position. Here are a bit of definitions:
RC/25:
A stat created by Bill James to measure how many runs a lineup of 9 of the same individual would score in a game. (The "real" version is RC/27, since there are 27 outs in a game; however, since certain stats are not readily available to us during the season, James has an abbreviated version known as RC/25 to adjust for the absence of those stats. For the formula to RC/27, please e-mail me. It is also available in Total Baseball and many other reference manuals.)
A = H + BB - CS B = 1.125 * 1B + 1.69 * 2B + 3.02 * 3B + 3.73 * HR + .29 * BB + .492 * SB - .04 * SO (Formerly B = TB + .64 * SB + .24 * BB - .03 * K) C = AB + BB
RC = ((A + (2.4 * C)) * (B + (3 * C)) / (9 * C)) - (.9 * C) O = AB - H + CS RC/25 = RC / O * 25
(The reason why HBP, among other stats, is not included is not because I think that they're not important; it's that the data sources I use do not include them with the "primary stats," and therefore, adding HBP and other stats would effectively require twice the work, and the gain, while considerable, was judged by me to be not worth it in interim reports.)
There are three additional Bill James adjustments that I do not use:
1. He adjusts for BA with runners on base. Originally, the adjustment was not published; but it has been, in the most recent STATS Major League Handbook and other sources. I am, however, not incorporating this change since I have found this change to be arbitrary and also increasing team-dependence.
2. He also adds additional points for a non-bases empty HR. Again, this is highly arbitrary -- why not add points for a non-bases loaded 1B, 2B, or 3B? Further, this increases team-dependence as well, which reduces the usefulness of RC.
3. He then adds up all players' RC on a team and adjusts it in a factor that is based on whether the team scored more than it is expected or less. I find that this defeats the point of RC, so I do not use this adjustment.
PRC/25:
Park-adjusted RC/25. Park adjustment is a topic that I don't know how to explain well in a paragraph, so I will not attempt to try. However, many works that explain it are available on the net, and any search engine should yield a number of useful articles. For these numbers, only this year's park factors are used.
Value:
An estimate of how many runs a player is above the ever so elusive "replacement level" (that is, a level of performance at which a player can easily be found at little or no cost to a team). For these posts, replacement level is estimated at 50 points of OBP and 50 points of SLG below the average for each position.
Notes:
1. For these posts, the players who were traded during the middle of the season have their park factors prorated by AB + BB with the teams. (This is not mathematically correct, but is the best I can do for now.) 2. Please send to me corrections if I misplaced someone's position.
"SABREmetrics isn't about statistics, it is about the search for new evidence." - Bill James (thanks, Bill Reich) =============================================================================== GO (LOS ANGELES) ANGELS OF ANAHEIM! =============================================================================== Nelson Lu (nlu@cs.stanford.edu)

From www.ramblinwreck.com: Duncan Pitches No. 17 Tech Baseball Past Boston College in Series Opener
The Jackets earned a win in the first game of the doubleheader
March 29, 2008
ATLANTA - David Duncan allowed just one hit through the first six innings to lead No. 17 Georgia Tech (20-5, 6-4 ACC) to a 5-2 win over Boston College (11-12, 2-8 ACC) in the series opener and first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.
Duncan (4-0) faced the minimum through the first 2.2 innings and, after allowing a single with two outs in the bottom of the second, retired 11-straight before giving up a solo home run to Tony Sanchez to break up the shutout. The 6-8 lefty worked a season-long eight innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out a season-high 10 batters.
Brad Rulon tossed the ninth inning and earned his second save of the season. After Rulon hit the first batter he faced, Eric Campbell dropped a single just out second baseman Thomas Nichols' reach to put runners on first and second. Rulon worked out of the jam by forcing a pair of flyouts before striking out pinch hitter John Spatola to end the game.
Georgia Tech took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Jason Haniger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jeff Rowland hit a sacrifice fly to plate Chris House. A solo home run by Derek Dietrich in the top of the third inning staked the Yellow Jackets to a 3-0 lead and an RBI single by Charlie Blackmon pushed the score to 4-0 in the fifth.

March 23, 2008
ATLANTA - Gabriel Saade had five hits and Tim Sherlock drove in four runs to help Duke (19-5, 4-5 ACC) avoid an ACC series sweep to No. 17 Georgia Tech (17-5, 5-4 ACC) with a 10-3 win Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Saade went 5-for-5 with three singles, a double and a ninth-inning home run while Sherlock collected two hits, including his first home run of the season, against the Yellow Jackets. Sherlock's three-run home run highlighted a four-run second inning for the Blue Devils.
Yellow Jacket starter Zach Von Tersch (2-1) lasted just two innings and suffered his first loss of the season after giving up the four runs, only three of which were earned, on three hits while walking two.
Derek Dietrich and Brad Feltes led Tech's offense with two hits apiece.
Tech recorded five-consecutive hits for the first time this season to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Thomas Nichols doubled down the right field line, moved to third base on a failed pickoff attempt by Duke's starting pitcher Grant Monroe, and scored on a ground-rule double by Charlie Blackmon for the first run of the game. Blackmon advanced to third on a base hit by Dietrich and scored Tech's second run on an RBI single by Feltes.
Dietrich helped Tech narrow the gap to one with a towering home run to lead off the third inning, but Monroe retired nine of the next 11 batters he faced to help the Blue Devils maintain the lead.
Monroe (4-1) limited Tech to three runs on seven hits and three walks while fanning two in five innings to earn his fourth win of the season after the Blue Devils added three runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 7-3.

March 22, 2008
ATLANTA - Eddie Burns carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and Jeff Rowland had two hits, including a home run, to help No. 17 Georgia Tech (17-4, 5-3 ACC) defeat Duke (18-5, 3-5 ACC), 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Burns (3-1) earned his third win of the season by holding the Blue Devils to two runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits while recording four strikeouts in seven-plus innings.
Rowland, Derek Dietrich and Jay Dantzler each had two hits for the Yellow Jackets while Duke's offense was led by Ryan McCurdy, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Brad Rulon picked up his first save of the season, and fifth of his career, by working out of a jam in the eighth inning and tossing a 1-2-3 ninth.
Rowland's home run, his second of the year, led off the fifth inning for Tech after Duke had tied the game 1-1. He also started a two-run rally for Tech in the seventh, drawing a walk and coming around to score on an error, and Brad Feltes extended the lead to 4-1 with a sacrifice fly.
Duke got within a run in the eighth after Matt Williams was hit by a Burns pitch to lead off, went to third on Rowland's dropped fly ball in center field and scored on Kyle Kreick's single. But Rulon, who gave up the hit in relief of Burns, got a strikeout and a double play to end the threat and retired the Blue Devils in order in the ninth.

ATLANTA - Charlie Blackmon homered and drove in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to help No. 17 Georgia Tech (15-4) to a 7-6 victory over Mercer (9-10) Wednesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Blackmon went 2-for-5 with four RBI to lead the Yellow Jacket offense while Jeff Rowland added two hits on the night.
Brad Rulon (3-0) picked up the win despite giving up the lead in the eighth inning. The senior yielded two runs on a two-out triple by John Dortch, but received the win after Blackmon hit a two-out single to plate Patrick Long and Chase Burnette in the bottom of the frame.
Chris Hicks earned his team-leading sixth save of the season by striking out John Moreland and forcing Tyler McCarty to hit into a double play to end the game.
Taylor Wood and Andrew Robinson both worked scoreless innings in relief of Yellow Jacket starter Brandon Cumpton, who held Mercer to four runs on nine hits in five innings.
Back-to-back run-scoring singles from Mike Armstrong and Moreland staked the Bears to a 2-0 lead with two outs in the top of the first inning, but the Jackets responded with a run in the bottom of the second and two more in the third inning to go ahead 3-2. Derek Dietrich worked a leadoff walk of Mercer starting pitcher David Harden in the second inning and came around to score on a double by Thomas Nichols. | Paid-entry league entering 8th season, looking for more managers: J.J. 20:04:23 |
| | Hi everyone. I'm the Commish of a league named Game Face, which is entering its 8th season as a paid-entry league. We use CBS Sportsline, which has proven to be a reliable service. Entry fee is $115, of which $100 goes toward the prize pool and the remainder toward league costs. New managers will have to pay via Paypal or a bank transfer, particularly this close to the draft. Four places are paid at season's end (it's full season), and we do pay out the ENTIRE prize pool, in a roughly 4:3:2:1 ratio, with a few more $$$ proportionately going to the top 2. Right now we have 11 teams with a 12th team likely. Our current set of managers are a cool group, not particularly boisterous but certainly competitive. They live everywhere from Montana to Florida to California.
Our draft will begin on Friday the 21st at 3:00 PM EST. It is an extended live draft, online, with 10 hours max. per pick and a draft robot that shuts down the draft for 6 or 7 hours at night so managers don't lose much of their allotted time while sleeping. Our drafts usually take about a week to complete, which we like as it extends the fun and gives each manager more time to evaluate his options. This year we'll probably ignore the games on the 25th and 26th, unless we rip through the draft in record time (for us).
There are no fees for transactions and you can set your roster daily. Trades take 2 days to process, in which time managers have the right to protest if they choose. Protests must only specify which side they are against (we've had 4 people protest a trade, with two on each side of the fence!). If 3+ protests are in agreement, the trade is vetoed. We don't see many protested trades, however. Waivers claims are processed daily.
Our scoring system is points-based and pretty straightforward. We award 1 point for a single, 2 for a steal, 5 points for a solo homer (we use RBI-HR), et cetera (15 categories in all, all updated live on the CBS website). Pitchers get 10 points for a win, 3 points per IP, -1 for walks and hits allowed, and so on (16 categories in all). If you've played in a points-based league before, you'll be comfortable enough. Positions to fill include C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, DH, OFx3, MI & CI. Starting pitchers have a 162 game limit, as do relievers.
I'm sure there's more I could detail, but this should be enough to peak some interest and I'll be happy to answer additional questions. I can also provide a phone # (and likely the #s of a few other managers if you want to check us out a bit more) so you can call and chat with me a bit. Email me at jjgahr@hotmail.com if you're interested.

I'm pretty good at fantasy baseball. I really think my prep regarding who to pick and who not to pick could help you. I'm selling my draft kit on ebay for $5. A small price to pay when you don't have the time to draft, or you are looking for a new way of doing things. Snake oil. That's what this is.....

I am playing fantasy for the first time. The league I am in has 7 categories for pitcher (w,l, era,k,w,whip, ip) and 7 categories for hitters (h,w,r,sb,hr,rbi, avg) 9 players in league. if you win one category, you get a 9. One with all the points wins. 9 position players including DH, 5 starting pitchers and 2 closers to be started daily. 6 bench players-any kind. Is it me but since most regular position players play everyday but pitchers dont, shouldnt I load up on pitchers so I can start as many on a daily basis. It would ad to my wins, ip,k just for having more pitchers starting instead of bench players sitting around. Am I wrong? Thanks for the advice lyle Just because you have alot of pitchers does not mean they are quality pitchers. If you have a bunch of bums, your ERA, Whip and Loses will suffer. It is always better to have good pitchers instead of alot of them. You don't say if you are using one major league or both for your players. If you are using only one, it will be hard to find more than five starters who are any good. --

| Lucky 13- Georgia Tech Notches First Road Win Your Name Here 13:02:50 |
| | After a 12-1 start at home, Tech outlasts its crosstown rival Georgia State at Panthersville Field Wednesday afternoon.
From www.ramblinwreck.com:
ATLANTA - Derek Dietrich's two-run home run in the fifth inning sparked a Yellow Jacket comeback to help No. 11 Georgia Tech (13-1) stop Georgia State (9-5), 10-6, Wednesday night at The Field at Panthersville. Trailing 5-2 in the top of the fifth inning, Dietrich sent his team-leading fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to pull the Jackets to within one run at 5-4. After Georgia State extended its lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Yellow Jackets scored three in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good. Chris House singled to lead off the sixth inning, stole second base and reached third on a balk before scoring on a single by pinch-hitter Jeff Rowland. Rowland moved to third on a double by Charlie Blackmon and the two baserunners scored on a single by Brad Feltes to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-6 lead. The Jackets held the one-run lead until the eighth inning, when they added three more runs to push the score to 10-6. Dietrich doubled for his third hit of the game and scored on an RBI groundout by Tony Plagman before Thomas Nichols' two-run double capped the scoring for Tech. Dietrich went 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored while House and Rowland added two runs apiece.

| Stanford: gonna be one of those years ... Tony Lima 02:41:03 |
| | The Cardinal take two of three at Tejas, winning the rubber game Sunday 11-8. The game was stopped after 8 innings because of a 4 pm time limit agreed to by the coaches before the game.
Better hang on for a wild ride. Mark Marquess appears to have a bumper crop of freshman pitchers. In Saturday's game, frosh RHP Drew Storen (Brownsburg, IN) got the win with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Sunday another freshman RHP Alex Pracher got the save in relief. Storen seems to have especially nasty stuff.
The offense so far has been carried by C Jason Castro, OF/LHP Sean Ratliff, 1B Randy Molina and quite a few others. Castro hit the game-winning two-run homer Saturday. Sunday Ratliff was 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, two home runs and five RBI. Just a single short of the cycle <g>. He also came in as a relief pitcher -- and got the win. Heck of a day. It's very good news because Ratliff had been in a bit of a slump to start the season.
Prediction: Monday morning Stanford will make its first appearance in the top 25 in quite a while. - Tony
